Houston, TX / Azusa, CA - Though inclement weather caused the final four men's and three women's events to be cancelled on Saturday at the Tom Tellez Invitational in Houston, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's and women's track and field teams posted eight new top-10 marks in school history and had four performances that moved into the top-25 in the nation across their competitions in Houston and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, CA.
With just two weekends of competition between them at the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships, the Javelinas are rounding into postseason form. Perhaps the best performance from a weekend full of them came from freshman
Christopher Gonzalez, who ran 51.58 in the men's 400m hurdles, winning the event, sliding him into sixth on the program's all-time performances list, and tying him for the tenth-fastest time run in the nation so far this year.
Gonzalez also took part in Kingsville's 4x100m relay. He joined
Malachi Barendilla,
Ausencio Martinez, and
DaTavus Pope to run a 40.18, which was both enough to win the event and to put them 12th in the nation.Â
On the women's side, sophomore sprinter
Oneika Brissett ran a stellar 200m. Brissett, who already holds top-10 time in the nation in the 400m, ran a 23.69, which is the fourth-fastest time run in school history, and the 15th-fastest run in all of D2 this season. Brissett's fellow Jamacian, junior
Kaylea Demetrius, went off for 14.19m throw in the women's shot put, sliding her up to seventh in school history and 23rd in the nation in the event.
In two different corners of the country, two different men's distance runners notched incredible times in the 1500m. In Houston, sophomore
Roberto Alejandro ran a 3:55.15, the new fourth-fastest time ever run by a Javelina. Meanwhile, in Azusa, freshman
Leon Doran ran a 3:56.20, the fifth-fastest time on the program's all-time recordbook. Also in Cali, sophomore
Kristian Green ran a new outdoor PR in the 800m with a 1:52.76, the 10th-fastest time in school history. On the women's side of the 1500m, junior
Ella Hester's 4:51.71 moved her onto the program's record book with the seventh-fastest time in school history.
In the field, a pair of women's throwers joined Demetrius with excellent performances in Houston. Freshman
Hailey Martinez and senior
Precious Silguero each had stellar throws in the hammer, going off for 50.31m and 48.88m respectively. Martinez moves to sixth on the program's all-time list, while Silguero slots in at ninth.
Next weekend, TAMUK's crews will be back in Houston to compete in the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational.
