Austin, TX - A ninth-inning surge was not enough for Texas A&M-Kingsville as they dropped the series finale to St. Edward's, 6-5, Sunday from Lucian-Hamilton Field.
In a two run game with two outs,
Landon Salinas blasted a ball over the left-field wall to cut the lead down to just one run.
Easton Hewitt got aboard to represent the tying run on the base paths, but he would not get across home as a fly-ball ended the Javelinas chances at a comeback.
Zachary Wright was called to start for his second consecutive Sunday start. The true-freshman was solid in his outing, allowing just a pair of runs with four K's through six full innings of work.
Ethan Ortega,
James Placke and
Clark Scallon also saw action in this game in relief.
The Javelinas kicked off the scoring in this one, as
Nick Reyes would score from second base thanks to a Hilltopper muffed catch in the infield with two outs on the board. St. Edward's got the run right back however in the third, knotting the game up at one-run apiece.
It would be St. Edward's that broke the 1-1 tie with a solo home run in the fifth, followed by a four-spot getting put up in the seventh to make it a 1-6 ballgame. The Javelinas kept battling however, as a
Braden Duff single drove in a run before an errant throw from the Hilltopper catcher cleared the bases to make it just a two-run game.
Scallon kept the Hilltopper off the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth to give the Javelinas a chance to get their first win of the series. Two strikeouts however dropped the chances of a comeback significantly, and while Salinas' homer kept the Javelinas' hopes alive, it was too-little too-late in Austin.
The Javelinas will be back in Kingsville to wrap up the regular season against West Texas A&M in a four-game series beginning on Friday. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game on FloCollege or follow the action at JavelinaBSB on X.
