Javelinas make history, win seven events at FasTrak Collegiate Classic

Houston - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's and men's track and field teams continued their momentum into FasTrak Athletix's Collegiate Classic, where they won seven events, collected 14 new top-10 marks in school history, and set two new top-15 marks in the nation.

After setting 22 new top-10 marks in program history last weekend, the Javelinas' full crew re-wrote more of the record book in their trip back to Houston. The Collegiate Classic was the second to last meet for TAMUK before the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships, and marked a key step forward for the teams as they look ahead to the postseason.

"I thought we had our best overall team meet of the season for both men and women but we're still building up to where I believe we can be," Head Coach Ryan Dall said. "There are still many improvements out there for us to make, so we will get back to practice this week and try to get a bit sharper for the meet next week."

Sophomore sprinter Oneika Brissett laid claim to both top national marks, as she won the women's 200m and took second place in the 400m. Her 54.61 in the 400m is the second fastest time in school history and the new ninth-fastest time in the nation in D2 this season. Her time of 24.25 in the 200m edged out her own time to set a new third-best mark in school history and the 14th-fastest in the nation.

She was joined in making history in multiple events by junior Kenzie Kurdys, who continues to make a steady climb up both the women's pole vault and 60m hurdles in her first year as a Javelina. She qualified for the finals in the 60mH, where she ran a 8.88, placing second in the event and setting the new fourth-best time in school history. She also cleared a bar set at 3.70m in the pole vault, picking up an event win and moving up to second in TAMUK's all-time record book.

Kingsville's distance crews also dominated the weekend, as both the men's and women's teams competed in the 5000m, where they combined to set four new top-10 marks in program history. Leading the way was sophomore Roberto Alejandro, who set the school record in the 3000m last weekend, with a 15:03.08, placing him second in the event and nabbing the new second-best time in school history. Sophomore Robert Trevino wasn't too far behind him, as he ran a 15:26.23, the new third-fastest time in school history. Freshman Kayla Trevino-Garcia's 5k time of 17:57.71 finished her second in the event and third in school history, while sophomore Yaritzy Acosta ran a 19:40.80, the new 10th-fastest time in school history.

"I was very happy for our event winners today," Dall said. "It's never easy to get a win with our schedule and the competition that we normally go up against."

The men's two event wins came from freshman sprinter Ausencio Martinez, who ran a 21.78 in the 200m, and Trevor Upton, who tied his top-10 mark in school history in the pole vault with a 4.90m clearance, leading four Javelinas who finished in the top five in the event.

TAMUK's other three event wins come on the women's side, including the combination of Jazmine Miller, Sophie Mossman, Nanhi Pannu, and Sakara Wade, who ran a 3:54.99 in the 4x400m relay. Senior high jumper Madison Ramos continued her stellar final season with clearance of a bar set at 1.70m, winning the event. Junior Karina Alvarez rounded out the victories with a throw of 13.59m in the shot put, the new 6th-best mark in school history.

The teams will be heading back to Houston next weekend for the Howie Ryan Invitational, which will be their final tune up before the beginning of their postseasons at the LSC Championships two weeks after.
