Box Score 1 Pueblo, CO - Using a big-hitting day, the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team picked up the first win of its season, ending its first day at the Southern Colorado Crossover with an 11-6 win over Adams St., the first of its season, after it took a 5-4 loss to Colorado State - Pueblo in an eight-inning battle in the first game of its day.
The Javelinas were led by junior first baseman
Dakota Martinez and sophomore third baseman
Alaunah Almaraz, who combined for seven hits and eight RBIs across the day's two games. As a team, TAMUK totalled 21 hits on the day, 13 of which came in the Hogs' win over ASU.Â
The first game of the day was a dog fight and, much like a number of the Javelinas' games early in the year, came down to the wire. After the Thunder Wolves used a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a late lead, TAMUK responded in a big way, as freshman DP Isa Hernandez scored sophomore
Elena Gonzales with a single that sent the game into extras. A walkoff bunt from Pueblo in the bottom of the eighth, however, gave the tournament's host a win.
Quick to respond yet again, the Javelinas began the game by putting up five runs in the bottom of the first, grabbing a lead that they would not surrender. Five more runs between the fourth and fifth innings, including a homer from outfielder
Lainee Ballin and a two-RBI single from Martinez, salted away the Hogs' first win. Six different Javelinas came up with multi-hit games against ASU, making a statement to close out the first of three days of competition in Colorado.
The team's second day will feature a morning matchup with Colorado at Colorado Springs at 11:00 a.m. central, before it heads to Pueblo for a rematch with the Thunder Wolves at 4:00 p.m. central.
