Javelinas power through Cameron for game one victory

Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville powered their way through Cameron University in game one of a three-game series, 11-7, Friday from Nolan Ryan Field.

The Javelinas (3-1, 3-1 LSC) only needed nine hits to plate double-figure runs for the second consecutive contest to down the Aggies (2-2, 2-2 LSC) for their second straight loss. Eight different Javelinas crossed home plate, while Isaiah Aguilar, Landon Salinas and Nick Reyes each notched a pair of RBI's.

The star of the show for the Javelina however was junior RBP Garret Nail. The native of Sweeny, Texas, bounced back after his opening-day loss in a big way with seven K's through six innings of work while only allowing a single run. Nail is now up to 16 strikeouts, five more than the next closest pitcher in the LSC.

Inning number three would be where the Javelina made their offensive stamp on the contest, plating four runs to take a commanding three-run lead. It was kicked off with a Salinas two-RBI double that scored Joshua Endo and Sergio Galvan Jr., then was capped off with a RBI-single from Reyes, who scored on a balk later in the inning. Texas A&M-Kingsville held the Aggies of the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth inning, before bolstering their lead with another RBI from Reyes, this time on a stand-up double.

If the bottom of the fourth put the Javelina up, the bottom of the seventh put the game away. Four more runs would come in for the Hogs after getting into the Aggie bullpen. A pair of walk-a-thon runs brought in both Fisher Davis and Eric Martinez before Aguilar cleaned up the remaining batters with a two-RBI single that made it 10-2. Salinas would get home in the eighth for an extra insurance run to make it 11-2.

A group of Javelinas made their collegiate baseball debuts in the waning innings of the game. Derek Martinez got the nod in the last two innings of the game at catcher while Sean Howell got some work in the top of the ninth. Cash Benavides also made his pitching debut for the Javelinas after joining the team last season.

Cameron would make the game a little dicey for the Javelinas in the ninth, as they would score five runs to cut into the Javelinas lead and make it just a four-run contest. However, true freshman Sawyer Smith got the nod to get the last out, fanning the Aggie batter to seal the deal in game one.

First pitch for Saturday's contest is set for 2:00 pm. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game on FloCollege or follow the game at JavelinaBSB on X.
