Lake Charles, LA - The Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas went 1-1 on the opening day of the Cowgirl Beach Bash, dropping a close match to host McNeese before bouncing back with a 4-1 victory over Nicholls State.

The Javelinas fell to the host Cowgirls in a hard-fought opener. McNeese took Pair 2 as Kalani Vasquez and Laura Betsa fell in straight sets, and Elizabeth Williams and Kate Wozniak dropped Pair 4 to give McNeese an early 2-0 advantage. Liana Huesca and Rylan Pollard kept TAMUK alive at Pair 1, rallying for a three-set win 21-16, 8-21, 15-13, and Emma Daugherty and Kastyn Hoffman added a dominant straight-set victory at Pair 3, 21-16, 21-11, to pull TAMUK within one. But McNeese closed it out at Pair 5 to secure the 3-2 victory.

The Javelinas responded in a big way against the Colonels. Vasquez and Betsa got things going with a straight-set win at Pair 2, 21-16, 21-16, and Williams and Wozniak added another point at Pair 4 in a thrilling three-set battle, dropping the first set before closing it out 25-23 and 15-12, to give TAMUK a 2-0 lead. Huesca and Pollard then dominated at Pair 1, winning 21-8, 22-20, to clinch the match. Daugherty and Hoffman continued their strong day at Pair 3, sweeping 21-13, 21-14. Nicholls State's only point came at Pair 5.

The Javelinas return to the sand tomorrow for two more matches, facing Sam Houston at 9:30 AM and New Orleans at 12:30 PM.
