Houston - Freshman men's distance runner
Leon Doran crushed the program's previous mile record, one of 14 new top-10 marks in school history for the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's and women's track and field teams at the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston, their regular season.
Doran's 4:12.35 mile time broke the school's previous best mark by more than three seconds, part of a recent tear for the men's distance team, which this year has set a pair of top-three marks in school history in both the 3000m and the 5000m. In addition to Doran's mile, the Javelinas put up four other second-best marks in program history, three of which were also top-20 marks in the nation.
After qualifying for the men's 60m finals with a 6.81, junior
DaTavus Pope placed second with a 6.71, the second fastest time run in the event in program history and the new 12th-best time in the nation. Later in the day, the combination of Nahni Pannu,
Sakara Wade,
Jazmine Miller,
Oneika Brissett set the new second-best mark in school history in the women's 4x400m relay with a 3:47.35, winning the event and moving up to 17th in the nation. Junior thrower Karina Alavarez had an excellent day as well, throwing 14.55m in the women's shot put, the 16th-longest throw in the nation so far this season and the new second-best mark in program history. Rounding out the new top-two performances was freshman distance runner
Jacob Rivera's 8:39.07 in the 3000m - it would have been the new school record if not for
Roberto Alejandro's 8:35.16, which was run just two weeks ago.
Kingsville put up a number of other strong performances in the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday, including a 48.23 in the men's 400m run by Joseph Mouaha in his Javelina debut, a top-50 time run in the nation in D2 this season and the new 5th-best time in school history, he joined the women's 4x400m relay as TAMUK's event winners on the day. Additionally, the program's women's high-jump record holder, senior
Madison Ramos, cleared a bar set at 1.75m, 0.01m shy of her record, which is currently the fifth-best jump in the nation.
The Javelinas will now have a week off as they await the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships, which are set for February 27th and 28th in Albuquerque, NM.
