Javelinas lose pair of Sunday games to close out Lone Star Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Mansfield - On its final day of competition at the D2 Lone Star College Classic, the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team lost, 7-5, to Missouri Western St. Griffins, and 10-2 to the Washburn Ichabods in five innings.

Kingsville came back late against the Griffins, tying the game with clutch hitting in the sixth, but came up just short after MWS responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Similarly, the Javelinas led the Ichabods heading into the bottom of the fourth, but costly errors led to a big frame for WU that put the game away.

The games came after a weekend muddled by weather concerns, which caused the Javelinas' two Saturday games to be cancelled, their Sunday games to be pushed back an hour, and the second opponent of their day to be swapped out (originally set to play Rockhurst). Even with these changes, the temperature hovered just above freezing at first pitch in game one.

TAMUK started the first contest slowly, allowing one run in each of the first two innings without putting up any of its own, leaving two stranded in the first. The team broke through in a big way in the third, however, as junior catcher Maria Valls Raya sent a tank deep over the centerfield wall, pulling Kingsville within one with the first home run of her career in the blue and gold.

After the Griffins answered back with three runs over the next two innings, Kingsville stepped up. Down by three in the sixth, the Javelinas rallied with with back-to-back hits that brought in run, the first was a double from freshman outfielder Kennia Chong that scored two, and the second from Valls Raya, who came up just feet short of her second homer of the day, bringing Chong home to tie the game. That late push came up just short, however, as MWS's late runs secured it a win.

The second game started much in TAMUK's favor, as the crew put together two hits and a walk in the top of the first, with sophomore second baseman Alexis Soliz's single bringing home freshman outfielder Victoria Vargas to give the team an early lead. Defensively, though she gave up five hits, sophomore LHP Esther Martinez allowed just one run through the first three frames.

The bottom of the fourth changed the game, with three Kingsville errors that compounded into eight Ichabod runs. They were able to tack on another, their tenth of the day, in the bottom of the fifth to bring the run rule into effect and end the game.

The Javelinas will be heading north once again next weekend, though this time they will be crossing state lines as they travel to the Southern Colorado Crossover, hosted by Colorado at Colorado Springs, where they will play four games in two days.
