Boston, MA / Cambridge, MA / Houston - The first weekend of the season that the full Texas A&M-Kingsville men's and women's track and field teams were in action saw them post incredible performances all across the country, including 22 new top-10 times/scores in program history, two of which are new school records.
The teams split up, competing at the Robert Platt Invitational in Houston, the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, and the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston. On Friday night in Cambridge, the men's distance medley relay of
Kristian Green,
Darius Bouakel, Jhonotan Rodriquez Osorno, and
Leon Doran combined to smash TAMUK's record in the event by more than 16 seconds, running a 10:07.91. Then, less than 24 hours later in Houston,
Roberto Alejandro ran a 8:35.16 in the 3000m, a new personal-best time by 14 seconds, and a new school record. That time came just a day after he ran the third best time in school history in the 5000m with a 15:33.59.
"I was happy for the men's DMR on Friday getting the school record," Head Coach
Ryan Dall said. "That's an event we don't really get to do often."
Despite having nearly three full weeks off since their last competition, the Javelinas' distance crew once again re-wrote the record books. Not far behind Alejandro were Jacob Rivero and
Robert Trevino, who ran the new third- and eighth-best times in school history in the 3000m, Trevino also ran the fifth-best time in program history in the 5000m. Not to be out-done, the sprint crew, 14 of whom competed in the West-coast invites, showed out as well.
Oneika Brissett not only ran a 24:34 in the 200m, edging out her own previous best to stay in third-place in the program's all time record book (new 12th-best in the nation), but also joined
Jazmine Miller,
Valentina Torres, and
Sakara Wade to run the 9th-best 4x400m time in school history (new 15th-best in the nation).
"The women had a very good day at Harvard on Saturday," Dall said. "Oneika had a really good 200 and then helped the 4x4 get a season's best time and one of the top 15 or so time in the country. Also,
Kristian Green ran well in his track debut for us and the men's 4x4 on Saturday also had a season best time and should be around 10th best in the country for Division II so far this season."
Women's pole vaulter
Kenzie Kurdys, who has climbed new rungs on the program's record-book ladder each time she's competed in the blue and gold, jumped to third with a clearance of a bar set at 3.56m.
"I still think we have a lot of improvement in us and we still have a lot of work to do before we get to the conference meet in a few weeks," Dall said.
