Oklahoma City, OK - In a pair of games that featured late-inning drama, the Texas A&M - Kingsville softball team lost 5-4 in both ends of its doubleheader with No.21 Oklahoma Christian.
The Javelinas put up three-run sides late in each game, but got edged out by clutch hitting from the Eagles. Graduate student outfielder
AJ Jasso's three-run double in the seventh inning of game one and freshman second baseman
Faith Nunez's three-run homer in the sixth inning of game two each gave TAMUK a late lead, but OC responded to each of them in turn to come away with the season sweep.
Game one did not start well for the Javelinas, who gave up a pair of first-inning runs, changing their pitcher from freshman
Arianna Alaniz to junior
Kristina Nash, and taking a while to get their bats going. They entered the fifth inning with just three hits, having left four on base. Graduate student outfielder
Lindsey Evans, however, came through in a big moment, slicing TAMUK's lead in half with an RBI single in the fifth. A few innings later, she singled to load the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh. That's when Jasso broke it open, clearing the bases with a double off the wall and giving Kingsville its first lead of the day. Not long after, the Eagles walked it off, scoring on a bases-loaded passed ball in the bottom of the seventh
Alongside Evans and Jasso, senior first baseman
Kaylynne Ruiz led the team offensively, going a perfect 3-3.Â
Game two saw more of the same dramatics, with the Javelinas taking a 4-1 deficit into the final two innings. After an RBI double from senior second baseman
Sophie Campbell in the second inning to cut their lead to one, the Eagles responded by putting a pair on the board in the third. In that sixth inning, the game changed, as Nunez went yard, knocking it over the left-field wall, tying the game - her second late-inning homer of the weekend. The bottom of the sixth saw yet another response from TAMUK's host, as the No.21 team in the country came up with another 5-4 win.Â
Kingsville will be back at home for its final games of the season at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field this week. The team will take on No.1 UT-Tyler at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Texas Woman's at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday.
