Austin, San Antonio - Sending their teams to both Austin and San Antonio, the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's and men's track and field teams produced 13 event wins and record-setting times once again as they competed at the Trinity Invitational and the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Freshman distance runner
Nirmit Dahiya led the way for the Javelinas, running a school-record 3:48.51 in the men's 1500m, while graduate student
Jazmin Ray broke her own, newly-set, triple jump record with a 12.73m leap. Not only that, but the men's 4x400m relay and senior
Ivanova Yanes' 10,000m run weren't far behind, each producing the second-best time in school history.
"It was a really good weekend overall," Head Coach
Ryan Dall said. "We could have been a little better in a few areas, but it was a bit of a tough time with the weather heading into the weekend that forced us to change some plans around. But the athletes responded well for the most part and now we're looking forward to competing in San Angelo."
The week started on Thursday when Yanes, competing in Austin at the Texas Relays, which was stacked with D1 power four schools, placed third in the 10k with a 36:09.64, the second-fastest time in school history.
Sterling Riles combined with
Tony Benitez,
Michael Samihamba, and
Taylor Chaney to run a 3:08.82 in the men's 4x4, just two tenths of a second off of the program's outdoor record in the event.Â
Graduate student
Madison Alegria led a 1-2-3 event in the women's high jump, clearing 1.74m, the third-highest jump in the nation so far this season. Just behind her were
Madison Ramos with a 1.69m jump and
Afaf Benhadja clearing 1.64m.Â
On top of Dahiya and Saturday's final relay, the men's team won six other events and the women's team won an additional five. A few events before running the anchor leg of the nearly record-setting relay, Chaney ran a 47.60 in the 400m, the 24th-fastest time in the nation so far this year, and enough to beat out his Javelina teammates to win the event. His fellow relay members,
Sterling Riles and
Michael Samihamba, finished just behind him to help TAMUK go 1-2-3 in the event. Riles ran a 47.90 for second place and Samihamba ran 48.08, placing third.Â
The men's 400m wasn't the final 1-2-3 event of the day for the Javelinas, as Jhonatan Rodriquez Osorno grabbed an 800m win, running a 1:51.44 to lead three straight Kingsville finishers.
Keyshawn Garcia was less than a half-second behind, running a 1:51.96, while
Cody Fountain, was even closer, finishing in third with a 1:52.11. A pair of the men's victories came in the field, as senior
Paxton Hair's 50.82m was the best throw in San Antonio on Friday. Freshman
Dorian Aranda got the first win of his collegiate career with a 13.36m leap in the triple jump. Rounding out the men's event winners was the crew's 4x100m relay team of
Nathaniel Grant,
Jonathen Macareno, Jean Paul Castro, and
Dorian Aranda.Â
On the women's side,senior
Maya Espinosa's continued an incredible weekend for the Kingsville distance crew, as her 4:39.75 is the new third-fastest 1500m in school history. She beat out Yanes, who joined her in San Antonio to place second in the event with a 4:44.65. Senior

Just two weeks remain between TAMUK and Javelina fans' lone opportunity to see the teams compete at home in the Cactus Cup on Saturday, April 12th.
