Irvine, CA. - Texas A&M-Kingsville split its opening matches at the Concordia Invitational on Friday.
The Javelinas (15-7) opened up the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Vanguard University before dropping their next match, 2-3, to Division I opponent California State University-Northridge.
Match one vs Vanguard University:
Starting off the tournament for the Javelinas was a match against Vanguard University.
Madelyn Wallace and
Kalani Vasquez got the wins started for the Javelinas with a 21-15, 18-21 and 15-13 win.Â
Liana Huesca and
Rylan Pollard got the Javelinas to match point with a 22-20, 18-21 and 15-7 win in the one's flight.
Laura Betsa and
Taylor McCarthy wrapped it up for the Javelinas in the first match of the day, taking down Vanguard with a dominant 21-13, 21-12 victory.
Match two vs CSU-Northridge:
Match two for the Hogs did not go as smoothly for the Hogs compared to the first match of the day. Wallace and Vasquez were able to get another win though with a 21-17, 21-13 win in the two's flight. However, the Javelinas could not get a win in the fourth flight as the two teams were knotted up at 1-1.
Needing two wins to get the match victory, Pollard and Huesca went to work getting a 19-21, 21-14, 15-10 victory in the one's flight. That would be the only wins the Hogs would get however, as CSUN handled business to take the match.
Texas A&M-Kingsville gets back to work for day two of the Concordia Invitational against Master's University Saturday at 11:00 am PST.
