Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville had chances to take both matches on the first day of the Javelina Beach Showdown, but could not capitalize as it fell in its matches on Friday.
The Javelinas (4-2) got into set threes for both of the second flights today, finding themselves in closely contested matches against Colorado-Mesa and UTEP. However, the Javelinas were able to pull it out late and fell to both teams on day one of the Javelina Beach Showdown.Â
Match one vs Colorado-Mesa:
Match one kicked off with the Javelinas splitting the first flight of the match, as
Meghan Stiefer and Emma Daughtery finished off their Maverick opponents in three sets with a dominant 15-9 set three. The two's were not so lucky however, as
Madelyn Wallace and
Kalani Vasquez fell in straight sets in their match.
Heading into the second flight, the Javelinas were not able to scoop up a win despite two matches heading into third sets.
Laura Betsa and
Taylor McCarthy were not able to seal up their win while
Rylan Pollard and
Liana Huesca suffered an extra-points loss in set three as the Javelinas fell to Colorado-Mesa in match one.
Match two vs UTEP:
Match two followed in suit with the first match, as Stiefer and Daughtery got their win in straight sets, 21-18 and 21-18. However Vasquez and Wallace dropped their match, 21-18 and 21-16.Â
In the second flight, the Javelinas were able to break the 1-1 match tie after
Elizabeth Williams and
Clara Presmanes-Garate got a three set win, 21-15, 12-21, 16-14. That would be all the Javelinas could get however, as they fell on courts one and two and eventually fell to UTEP.
Texas A&M-Kingsville celebrates senior day tomorrow in between matches against Wayland Baptist and Tarleton State. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. CST.
