Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville fell just short on throwback night against Midwestern State, 73-76, Thursday at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
The Javelinas (11-15, 7-13 LSC) had a lead with just 9:16 left in the second half thanks to a
Jake Arnold jumper, however the Mustangs would out-pace the Javelinas from that point onward. MSU would go on a 16-3 run in about seven minutes of game time to go up by 10 and eventually hold on in Kingsville.
It was not a quiet end to the game for the Hogs though, as a furious rally sparked by a fast break dunk from
Nate Lacewell kept the Javelinas in the fight.
Allen Singleton would hit a floater right afterwards and Texas A&M-Kingsvile was starting to build some momentum.Â
Isaiah Payne would cut the Mustangs' lead to six with a corner 3-pointer with just over a minute left in the game, and a pair of Lacewell free throws got the game down to a four-point lead. Subsequent defensive traps by the Javelinas were unsuccessful as MSU started to pull away from the free throw line.
Bryson Goldsmith would hit a wild bank-shot 3-pointer with just four seconds left to get the game to one, but the tying shot would be too strong at the game's end.
Zyon Little led the Javelinas with 17 points, Payne finished with 16 points while Singleton and Lacewell both ended in double figures with 12 and 10 respectively. Lacewell would nearly notch a double-double this game with a team-high nine rebounds while Singleton nearly matched a career high in assists with six.
Texas A&M-Kignsville continues the final homestead of the season as it takes on Lubbock Christian University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CST. Fans of the Javelinas can watch live on FloCollege or follow live coverage at JavelinaMBB on Twitter.
