Kingsville - With just one week until the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships, the Texas A&M - Kingsville men's and women's track and field teams are headed back to Houston on Friday for the Howie Ryan Invitational.
The Javelinas are coming off of yet another spectacular showing last weekend then the teams posted four new scores in the top 15 in the nation and won seven different events. Ahead of the final weekend of the regular season, Kingsville has 39 athletes and a relay qualified for the conference meet on the women's side and 31 as well as two relays on the women's.
Tomorrow's Invite, which will, in addition to TAMUK, feature eight teams, represents the final opportunity for both Javelina athletes to qualify for the Conference meet and Javelina coaches to tweak lineups ahead of the postseason.
"We are looking for both teams to compete," Hall said. "This meet has some more quality than we saw last week, we are hoping this helps to push our athletes."
In addition to the host Cougars and the Javelinas, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana Monroe, Rice, and Stephen F. Austin are set to compete in Yeoman Fieldhouse tomorrow. Last weekend, TAMUK brought 55 athletes up the coast, this time 39 Javelinas are set to compete, 18 on the men's side and 21 on the women's.Â
"We are bringing a smaller group to this meet," Assistant Coach
Zachary Hall said. "We have a mix of athletes we are looking to fine tune and some who are hoping to qualify for conference."
Field events at the meet are set to begin at 11 a.m. with track events starting at 1:30 p.m., the day will be live streamed on YouTube with live results to be posted on Athletic.net.
"When it comes to this meet, we want to see event wins," Hall said. "The veterans that are coming this week understand this is the final tune up."
