Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville fell in both games of a double-header Saturday to Eastern New Mexico at Nolan Rylan Field.
The Javelinas (0-3, 0-3 LSC) lost 9-1 to the Greyhounds (3-0, 3-0 LSC) in game one and came up just short in game two, losing to Eastern New Mexico 6-5.
In game one, it was redshirt-freshman
Tyler Schumann on the mound for the Javelinas, getting the first career start of his career. Schumann was able to retire the first two Greyhounds with a pair of strikeouts, but gave up three hits that brought in two runs with two outs to give ENMU an early lead.
After both teams went scoreless in their next two at-bats, Texas A&M-Kingsville was able to get the bases loaded after the Greyhounds walked
Jacob Cueva, then
Damian Carreon singled to send Cueva to third,
Joshua Endo was then walked by ENMU. Four straight balls were thrown to
Javier Benavides to bring Cueva home to get the Javelinas on the board.Â
The very next inning would not be kind to the Javelinas however, as the Greyhounds had five hits and scored five runs and Texas A&M-Kingsville committed a throwing error, which ballooned the ENMU lead to 7-1. This was enough to keep Texas A&M-Kingsville at bay and give the Greyhounds game one.
Game two of the double header began as a pitchers duel between Texas A&M-Kingsville and Eastern New Mexico, as
Karson Shepherd was called up to start for the Javelinas. Shepherd threw a near-flawless first four innings, allowing just a single hit and striking out seven batters.
Everything unraveled in the top of the fifth however, as the Greyhounds scored six runs on five hits, including a base-clearing double into left-center field, that gave them a commanding 6-0 lead over the Javelinas.
Texas A&M-Kingsville would not go quietly however, as a throwing error by the Greyhounds would bring
Jayden Martinez home to get the Javelinas on the board.
Vincent Sanchez would add another run with an RBI single to third base to bring Endo home that closed the gap for the Javelinas.
In the bottom of the sixth, it would again be Martinez who provided clutch offense with a two-out double into right field to get on base. A
Nick Reyes walk would get two on, and another Endo hit would load the bases. Martinez would soon be brought home after a wild pitch from ENMU to bring the gap within three.
Still in the sixth inning, a walk from
Isaiah Aguilar would once again load the bases for the Javelinas. Sanchez would then once again find some magic as a two-RBI to the right side brought in Endo and Reyes. With the tying run on third, an attempted steal from Sanchez made ENMU's catcher throw to tag him out bringing Aguilar home on an attempted steal. The Greyhounds second baseman was able to get the throw just in time, tagging Aguilar out at home.
With just one inning left, Texas A&M-Kingsville was not able to get the clutch hitting they needed. A pair of strikeouts from the Javelinas would be their undoing as they fell in game two.
The final game of the series against ENMU is set for 1:00 p.m. CST at Nolan Ryan Field. Fans of the Javelinas can watch live on FloCollege or follow live coverage at JavelinaBSB on Twitter.Â
