Salt Lake City, Utah - In its second game in under 24 hours, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team fell, 54-46 to the Westminster Griffins at the Westminster Classic.
Kingsville had an excellent start to the ballgame, but a strong third quarter from the Griffins and 23 total turnovers from the Javelinas led to the second loss of TAMUK's season.
"We have no offensive rhythm," Head Coach Micheal Madrid said. "No flow. Turnovers and poor decision-making hurt us tremendously this weekend."
Kingsville kept pace with Westminster early, taking just a four-point deficit into the halftime locker room. Twelve first-half points in the paint and the best performance of redshirt junior guard
Kaycee Groves' young season allowed TAMUK to stick around, as she put up seven points, three rebounds, and a steal in her 10 minutes of play before halftime. The third quarter, however, saw a 22-point explosion from the Griffins, who broke the game open, never allowing the Javelinas back in.Â
"I thought we finished today a lot better than we started, effort and energy wise," Madrid said. "But we never got into any offensive rhythm this weekend."
For the second straight game, Kingsville's fourth quarter was by far its best, out-scoring the Griffins by six behind nine points from its bench. The team held Westminster to just five points in the frame but was unable to complete its late comeback bid.
Sophomore forward
Thalia Daniels and freshman forward
Justine Aguilar finished the game tied for the team lead in both points and rebounds, with eight points and seven boards a piece. Aguilar added four steals and two assists as well. Despite the loss, the Javelinas had another solid day on the glass, out-rebounding their hosts by six and holding them to under 30% shooting from beyond the long line.
The Javelinas will be back on the hardwood this coming weekend in San Antonio for a pair of games at the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic.
