Women’s basketball to tip-off season with home exhibition game

Kingsville - Women's hoops officially returns to Kingsville this weekend, as the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team is set to host DIII McMurry in an exhibition game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m..

It will be the first time the Javelinas hit the hard wood since their history-making run in the Lone Star Conference Tournament at the end of last season, which saw them upset the No.5-ranked team in the nation and make it to the Tournament's Semifinal round for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

"These exhibition games are a tremendous measuring stick for us," Head Coach Michael Madrid said. "Our players are excited. They are fun to be around and work so hard every single day. We look forward to having some fun Saturday, competing against a quality program and learning a little more about our group. We have a long journey ahead of us and are excited about the possibilities."

The Warhawks are coming off of quite the season themselves, having finished with a 23-6 overall record last year, which included multiple wins at the NCAA DIII National Tournament. Unlike the Javelinas, however, this will not be the first competition of the year, as McMurry opened its regular season on Monday with a 74-52 road win over Howard Payne University.

A pair of seniors led the crew in that win, each putting up excellent stat lines. Forward Aryana Cleveland put up a game-high 26 points along with six rebounds and four assists on 12-of-21 shooting. Guard Helana Chadwick also stuffed the stat sheet with 21 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, and five steals.

Kingsville will feature a team full of new faces. Five incoming freshmen and six transfer athletes as well as a pair of new assistant coaches under Madrid, who is set to enter his seventh year leading the program, rounds out a versatile and talented roster, who Javelina fans will get their first taste of Saturday afternoon.

The game is set to tip off at 1:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on Flo Sports.
