Game Recap: Football |

Javelinas can not hang on to a late lead against the Mustangs

Wichita Falls, TX - Texas A&M-Kingsville could not hold onto a late lead in Wichita Falls as it fell, 31-24, to the Midwestern State Mustangs on Saturday.

The Javelinas (2-3, 1-2 LSC) led by eight points with just 3:48 left to go in the fourth quarter before the Mustangs (1-4, 1-2 LSC)  evened things up with a 15-yard passing touchdown and a successful two-point conversion. A three-and-out by the Javelinas' offense led to a 69-yard punt return that put MSU up for good.

There was still hope for the Javelinas with 2:13 left in the game. Jack Turner and Andre Brach led the Javelinas down the field, getting all the way to the five yard line of the Mustangs. The offense was not able to cash in the opportunity, as three straight incompletions sealed the Javelinas fate in Wichita Falls.

It was a game of miscues for both teams today, as the teams combined for seven turnovers in the contest. Texas A&M-Kingsville were accounted for four first-half turnovers, three of which happened inside Mustang territory.

Despite the costly turnovers, the Javelinas were able to secure big offensive plays in the first half. Turner found Ivan Thomas for a 65-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter and freshman Edward Chumley scampered up the middle for a 34-yard touchdown in the second quarter to put the Javelinas up, 14-13.

Texas A&M-Kingsville was able to capitalize off of their three forced turnovers, scoring 14 points on said plays. Perhaps the biggest one came late in the third quarter, when a mishandled exchange by the Mustangs allowed Doug Brooks to scoop up the loose ball and rumble his way into the endzone to  give the Javelinas an eight point lead heading into the fourth.

Midwestern State scored first in the final 15 with a 28-yard field goal to cut it to a five points game. Daniel Gauna answered right back with a field goal of his own to build it back up to an eight-point lead, which would be the last time the Javelinas held a lead against the Mustangs.

Texas A&M-Kingsville returns back to Javelina Stadium to take on Angelo State on Oct. 11. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game live on FloCollege or follow the game at JavelinaFB on X.
