Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville fell just short against St. Edwards, 69-66, Thursday at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
The Javelinas (9-11, 5-9 Lone Star Conference) held a three-point lead after a
Jake Arnold layup with just under three minutes remaining. However the Hilltoppers (13-9, 6-6 LSC) scored seven quick points to retake the lead, then secured a late steal and dunk that essentially ended the game for the Javelinas.Â
This late burst came after Texas A&M-Kingsville clawed back from a nine-point deficit that St. Edward's held with just under 11 minutes in the game. The comeback was fueled by the spectacular play from
Bryson Goldsmith, who scored 10 points in five minutes to bring the Javelinas back in striking distance.
Zyon Little would then find
Nate Lacewell in the paint as the Javelinas took back the lead.
After scoring 70-or-more points in nine games in a row, the Javelinas scored under 70 points for the first time since Dec. 15. Texas A&M-Kingsville shot just 38.1 percent from the floor and 23.3 percent from deep. However the Javelinas were able to get multiple second chance points thanks to winning the rebounding battle, 46-34.
Goldsmith finished with a career-best 24 points, his second 20-point game of the year.
Daniel Sanchez added nine points and Lacewell finished with seven. Lacewell also led the team with seven boards and
Allen Singleton led the team with five assists.Â
