Loyd Lewis inducted into Javelina Hall of Fame

Kingsville - Former Javelina Football player Loyd Lewis was selected to be a member of the Javelina Hall of Fame Texas A&M-Kingsville athletics announced on Wednesday.

Lewis is the third of five selections to be announced for this year's Hall of Fame class. With each selection being announced on sequential Wednesdays.

As versatile as it gets as a player, Lewis played on both the offensive and defensive line for Javelina Football from 1980-83, was the only team captain for the 1983 Javelina football team and was a four-year letterman for Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Hailing from Dallas South Oak Cliff, Lewis erupted during his Junior season with the Javelinas, earning first team all-conference awards for the Lone Star Conference as an offensive guard.

His senior year would officially cement his legacy with the Javelinas, where he would be named an Associated Press and an American Football Coaches Association first team all-American as well as receiving another selection to the LSC's first team all-conference.

Lewis was taken in the seventh round of the 1984 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings and would play his professional ball with the Houston Gamblers (1984-85), Ottawa Rough Riders (1985-91), Edmonton Eskimos (1992), Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1993-94) and returned to Ottawa from 1995-96. Lewis would rack up 91 career sacks in his career with the CFL.

The Hall of Fame Ceremony is set for February 21st at the Student Union Building ballroom.
