Track & Field ready to compete for a conference championship in San Angelo

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville track & field teams are ready to compete for it all as they head to San Angelo for the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships.

The meet will feature all of the conference's track & field teams - 11 for the men and 12 for the women - as they battle it out for a conference title. West Texas A&M is the defending champion for both the men's and women's titles for three years in a row.

The Javelinas hold strong marks across the conference in multiple events heading into the meet. On the track, Taylor Chaney holds the third-fastest time in the LSC in the men's 400 meters at 47.53. Likewise, Maya Espinosa is third-best in the women's 800m with a time of 2:13.22.

Furthermore, the men's 4x400 relay team of Chaney, Tony Benitez, Sterling Riles, and Gabriel Field are second-fastest in the conference with a 3:10.74 while Field also holds the second-fastest time in the mens 400m hurdles at 52.52.

On the field, the Hogs have four conference leaders in Thomas Nieto, Markim Felix, Devon Williams, and Katryna Hernandez.

Nieto secures the top spot in the men's pole vault at 5.50m (18' 0.5") while Felix leads the men's javelin throw by a considerable margin with a best of 72.44m (237' 8"). The two both also hold top-five marks in all of Division II in said events.

Williams records a conference-best 49.91m (163' 9") throw in the women's discus throw while Hernandez is almost a meter better than second place in the women's shot put with a best throw of 15.10m (49' 6.5"). The two's marks are also some of the best in the country, with Hernandez's at 12th and William's in 4th.

The meet kicks off on Thursday, May 9 and continues on through Saturday. Competition starts off with the decathlon and heptathlon at 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. Field events start at 3 p.m. with the women's hammer throw while running events begin at 6:30 p.m. with the women's 1500m.

Angelo State will stream prime time track and field events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network and on the LSC Digital Network OTT app.
