CANYON, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville Softball Team took on the Cameron aggies in their first matchup of the LSC Tournament where they would put together a come from behind win 9-8 featuring a four run bottom of the seventh which would send them to the 6:30 matchup against the host school West Texas.
Cameron would get things started early with a leadoff triple right out the gates followed by a walk and a stolen base putting the Aggies in a prime position with two runners in scoring position and nobody out in the inning. A single through the right side would get both runners home making it 2-0 early in the top of the first inning. A single up the middle would get another run across, and the Aggies would send things to the bottom of the first up 3-0.
A two out
Kayla Gonzales single and an
Aaliyah Ortiz walk to follow would put two on and two out early for the Javelinas, but nothing doing as the inning would end and things would go to the second 3-0 Cameron on top.
Nothing except a two out
Seleste Compian single would happen for either squad in the second and the game would progress to the third still with the Aggies on top 3-0.
The Aggies would continue to pour it on in the top of the third as a Home Run, and an RBI double would add to their lead making it 5-0 sending things to the bottom of the third where the Javelinas would go down in order.
The fourth would see more Cameron offense as another triple followed by an RBI single would make it 6-0 with the Javelinas needing to make up some ground and fast.
The Javelinas would in fact get going however, as
Kaylynne Ruiz would double down the left field line followed by an
Anissa Lechner walk setting up
Compian for a 2 RBI triple getting the Javelinas on the board 2-6 still trailing the Aggies.
Fast forward to the top of the sixth where a 2-run Home Run would add to the Aggie lead making things bleak for the Javelinas putting them down 8-2 with only two at bats left.
It seemed to be the same story in the bottom of the sixth as it would start with a
Ruiz single but would quickly become one out as
Sarah Montes would ground into a fielder's choice. She would move up on the
Lechner single to left and the bases would load up on the error caused by a
Compian ground ball. The Javelinas would then begin to get hot as
Breana Carr would single up the middle bringing in
Montes to chip away at the lead.
Lindsey Evans would follow with a single of her own to center driving in two in
Lechner and
Compian, and just like that the Javelinas were only down 3 with the score of 8-5.
Nothing doing in the top half for the Aggies but the last chance for the Javelinas in the bottom of the seventh as the Aggies still led 8-5. The Javelinas were not done yet as
Ruiz would get on all the way to third on an error to lead off the inning, followed by a pinch hit walk by
Jackie Garza, and a walk by
Lechner to load up the bases with no outs in the inning.
Compian would walk and a run would come across 8-6 now the score, bases still loaded and still no outs.
Evans would hit into a fielder's choice but
Garza would score from third and it's an 8-7 game now with two outs in the inning.
Gonzales would tie things up with a single to left scoring
Lechner and now both squads have a ballgame on their hands 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh. An
Ortiz walk would load up the bases and the fate of the Javelinas advancing to the next round of the tournament would rest on the shoulders of freshman
Dakota Martinez. With two out in the inning, and bases loaded,
Martinez would send the Javelinas into the next matchup walking it off and sending the Javelinas to the 6:30 game with host institution and number one seed West Texas.
