SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The bats heated up exactly when they needed to as the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team leaves St. Mary's with a win and a series split on Sunday afternoon.
The Javelinas (23-15, 21-15 LSC) have gone three series without dropping one, sweeping their previous two before now. The Rattlers (14-20, 12-20 LSC) keep searching for their first series win since late February against Oklahoma Christian.
Both teams opened up the scoring in the third inning with a run apiece.
Ramsey Amador picked up the first RBI of the afternoon, grounding out to second base but bringing home
Dalton Kramer who was waiting at third.
The teams both chalked up one run again in the fifth inning to bring the score to 2-2. Amador tallied his second RBI with another sacrifice, this time a fly ball to right field to score
Jacob Rosales, who preceded Amador with a triple.
The Javelinas finally managed to definitively inch ahead in the seventh inning with one more run. Another sacrifice brought the go-ahead run across the plate as
Jake Chapman grounded out to second, bringing home Rosales from third.
The bats finally heated up when it mattered as the Javelinas plated four insurance runs in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach.
Michael Cervantes got things going in a big way for the Hogs with a triple to right-center field, clearing a set of loaded bases for three RBIs.
Vincent Sanchez followed up with a single to complete Cervantes' trip around the bases to bring the score to 7-2.
The Rattlers responded with their own bases loaded threat in the bottom of the inning, even bringing home one run to make the score 7-3, but the Javelina defense tightened up and closed out the game.
Carson Shepherd (4-0) picks up the W for the Javelinas and
Julius Rivas grabs the save. The save is his sixth of the year in 15 appearances. Brody Ticer (1-1) is pegged with the loss for St. Mary's.
