KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville Softball Team would host the #2 West Texas Lady Buffs for the finale of the three game series Sunday, where they would drop a tight 7-4 matchup late.
The Javelinas would start the game out sitting down the Lady Buffs quickly as the only runner would get on via a 2 out walk erased by a line out to third.
The Javelinas got going early in the bottom of the first as they put a whole new meaning to two out rally with
Kayla Gonzales singling to left followed by
Aaliyah Ortiz and
Lindsey Evans getting on loading the bases via the walk.
Kaylynne Ruiz would also draw a walk driving in the first run of the game sending the Javelinas to the second up 1-0.
The top of the second would see a one out single, and a runner advance to second on a ground out, but a lineout would end any hopes for a run in the inning sending things to the bottom half Javelinas still up 1-0.
Bottom of the inning would see
Anissa Lechner lead off the inning with a walk before switching places at first with
Victoria Mosqueda who hit into a fielders choice leaving a runner on first with one out in the inning.
Seleste Compian would reach on an error advancing
Mosqueda to third putting runners on the corners with one out in the inning.
Breana Carr would double down the right field line to score both
Compian and
Mosqueda putting the Javelinas up 3-0 early.
Ortiz would walk and
Evans would be hit by the pitch to load the bases for the Javelinas second inning in a row. Nothing would come of this however and the game would go into the third Javelinas up 3-0.
West Texas would quickly cut into their deficit in the third, as a one out homer would be the only hit and only run of the inning cutting the lead to 2, the Javelinas still up heading to the bottom half 3-1.
The Javelinas would be sat down in order in the bottom of the third sending things to the fourth up still 3-1.
The fourth would see the Lady Buffs offensive resurgence as they would start the inning out with a lead off single followed by another single to put runners at first and second with no outs. A single up the middle would score a run closing the gap for the Lady Buffs. Another single would load the bases for West Texas before the Javelinas would be forced to make a pitching change bringing in
Jordyn Rodriguez. She would immediately give up a double to left bringing in two runs for the Lady Buffs before heading to the bottom of the fourth, now leading 4-3.
Carr would get things going for the Javelinas in the bottom half as she would knock a one out single up the middle followed by
Gonzales being hit by the pitch to put runners on first and second with one out in the inning.
Ortiz would double to right driving in
Carr before the inning would end all tied up at 4 heading to the fifth.
The top of the fifth wouldn't see much as two singles would be the only offensive production for the Lady Buffs heading to the bottom half still tied at 4.
Bottom of the fifth would only see a
Lechner one out single before heading to the sixth still all tied at 4 apiece.
The top of the sixth would get going for West Texas with a one out single followed by a stolen base making it 2 outs and a runner on second. A triple to left center would score a run for the Lady Buffs sending things to the bottom of the sixth up 5-4.
Carr would again get things going for the Javelinas leading off with a single being the only offense in the bottom half of the sixth heading things to the top of the seventh still down 4-5.
An error would begin the inning for the Javelinas putting a runner on first early with nobody out.
Carissa De Los Santos would come in to pitch for
Rodriguez hoping to limit the damage getting two outs early. However, a wild pitch would advance a runner to second for the Lady Buffs a two out double would score a run, then a throwing error would score another run sending things to the bottom half of the seventh and last chance for the Javelinas down 4-7.
Dakota Martinez would walk to lead off the final frame and
Mosqueda would put some life into the Javelinas with a one out single putting runners at first and second with one out. A strikeout and fielders choice would end the game for the Javelinas dropping the game and ultimately the series.
