FORT SMITH, Ark. - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team opened the series against the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions with a 4-2 win on Friday afternoon thanks to a pair of solo home runs in the fifth inning.
The Javelinas (14-13, 12-13 LSC) get back in the win column after dropping three straight against UT Tyler. The Lions (12-9, 12-9 LSC) fall behind 1-0 in the series after splitting their previous series against TAMIU.
The Hogs were the first to strike after three innings of play as
Jacob Rosales knocked through a double to left field to bring home
Garrett Thompson, who opened the inning with a single. The Javelinas struck once more in the next inning to stretch the lead to 2-0.
Vincent Sanchez picked up up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to right-center field to bring home
Ramsey Amador.
Recording a third-straight scoring inning in the fifth, Thompson and
Dalton Kramer both blasted solo home runs to right field to extend the Javelina lead to 4-0. The Lions finally mustered runs across the plate in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two, but it wasn't enough as the Hog defense clamped back down and closed out the game to take the win, 4-2.
Carter Poulson (2-2) grabs the win for the Javelinas and
Julius Rivas grabs his third save of the season. Grant Shankle (2-1) is credited with the loss for the Lions.
The Javelinas and the Lion will meet again on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader with game one scheduled for 1 p.m. and game two slated for approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
