KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville Women's Basketball Team would host the #RV Texas A&M International Dustdevils where they would play a hard-fought game ultimately coming up short 73-83.
"I thought in the first half we played really well pretty much from both ends of the floor." said coach
Michael Madrid. " I think we had a little bit of a lead at halftime and then we come out in the second half and forgot you have to play defense in the second half I guess. We gave up 50 points in the second half, in conference we've been giving up 58 points for the game and we gave up 50 in the second half. So I think that was a big part of it in terms of not playing any defense, and of course turnovers there at the end were just massive and really kind of put the dagger in us toward the end of the game".
Junior
Mia Rivers led the scoring for the Javelinas this time out with 23 Points also grabbing 6 boards, 4 steals, and 6 assists. Right behind her with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 steal on the night was
Shelby Ray
Another milestone was reached by the Javelinas as
Mia Rivers not only led the game in scoring with 23 points, but she was able to get one assist. Coming into the game tied for the all-time record for Assists in a season all she needed to do was have one assists to once again be a part of Javelina history and etch her name once again in the record books.
Rivers ended with 6 on the night putting her Assists at 155 on the season breaking a record that stood for 24 years since the 1999-00 season.
The Javelinas trailed in most categories on the day, but were neck and neck in some suck as Rebounds only trailing by two boards 34-36, steals only trailing by three 7-10 and three-point percentage 41.7% to Internationals 47.1%
The game would start out as one of those back-and-forth battles as the Dustdevils would strike first, but the Javelinas would strike right back as
Aina Maynou would start out the game with a three ball for the Javelinas assisted by
Mia Rivers giving her the solidified spot in Javelina history as the number one in season assists. Both
Abby Bala and
Veyda Lake would go up to the line and add to the score bringing it to an early 6-7 deficit with 6:40 left in the first.
Jayde Tschritter would take the lead back for the Javelinas with a three ball at the 6:06 point in the first before again extending the lead at the 4:12 mark with yet another three.
Rivers would sink a layup, but a TAMIU three would tie things at 14 with only about 50 seconds to go.
Rivers would go 1-2 from the line and the Javelinas would stand tall on defense sending things to the second 15-14 Javelinas on top.
The second would see
Janessa Payne try and widen the gap as she drains a three ball right as the quarter begins to put the Javelinas at 18-14. The Dustdevils would respond with a layup continuing the back-and-forth style of scoring from both squads.
Bala pulls up for a jumper and makes the gap a bit wider but once again the Dustdevils respond with a bucket of their own now 20-18 with 7:53 left to go. A Dustdevil three would give them the lead but a
Bala free throw would tie things back up at 21. TAMIU would go 2-2 from the charity stripe taking the lead, but
Lake would do the same to tie things up once more 23 all with 5:03 left in the half. A small 5 point run by the Dustdevils would be washed away with a
Rivers deep ball bringing things to within two, before the Dustdevils would respond with a three of their own extending the gap once more.
Shelby Ray would then hit a free throw followed by a
Payne three where the game was again within one 30-31 with 1:54 before halftime. After a TAMIU layup the Javelinas would be all about the three ball closing the quarter and half draining two threes and two free throws sending things to the locker rooms with the Javelinas up 38-33.
Coming out of the locker room, it would remain to be a battle before the Dustdevils would go on a 14-0 run lasting 3:56 of game time putting TAMIU up 49-40 with 5:40 left in the third.
Bella Sipowicz would get things going as it was now the Javelinas on a run going 10-0 over the next 2:16 of game time regaining the lead 50-49 with 3:24 to go. The Dustdevils would combine for 4 points putting two layups together to send things to the fourth 53-50.
The fourth would start with a
Rivers pull up right out the gates to put it within one for the Javelinas 52-53 with 9:37 left in the final frame. The Dustdevils would do what they did all night which is respond, converting a layup widening the gap to three.
Maynou would go 1-2 from the line to put the deficit to two once again before the Dustdevils would make another layup putting the score at 53-57 with 8:07 left in the fourth.
Ray this time would go 1-2 from the line before converting the layup tying things at 57 with 6 minutes left in the contest. The next minute and fifty-four second would see back and forth, bucket for bucket basketball as each team would literally go blow for blow featuring
Ray and Rivers layups and a
Bala three putting the Dustdevils in front 66-64 with 4:21 to go.
Rivers would tie the game with a pull up jumper, before the Dustdevils would begin their run. The Javelinas would see themselves down two with 1:18 left after a barrage of free throws and a
Georgia Ohiaeri layup would keep the matchup close beforte the Dustdevils went on an 8-0 run to end the game 83-73.
