Men's Basketball takes on TAMIU in final game of the season

The Hogs are back in the SPEC one last time to close out the 2023-24 season

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team is back in the SPEC for one last game as they take on the Texas A&M International Dustdevils in the final game of the season on Thursday night.

Last week, the Hogs completed their final road trip of the season as they took on Midwestern State and Cameron, going 0-2 on the weekend.

The Javelinas (6-20, LSC 4-17) and the Dustdevils (16-11, LSC 12-9) have met once before this season in Laredo, where the Dustdevils narrowly took the win in a defensive slugfest, 48-45. Tipoff for the final game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Nate Garcia has showed out for the Javelinas in his last few games, putting up a new career-high in both scoring and rebounding his last time out against Cameron. Garcia led the team in scoring for the first time in his tenure in the Blue & Gold, tallying up 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting as well as grabbing six rebounds - third-most on the team.

Kendrick Washington has also turned in impressive performances in his last few games, posting 14 points in two of his last three and double-digit points in six of his last seven. He also has been good on the boards, grabbing 11 total rebounds last weekend.

C.J. Smith continues to be the linchpin of the Javelina offense, totaling 28 points last weekend, scoring 18 against MSU and 10 against Cameron. Smith has scored double-digits in all but five games this season and has also been impressive defensively, grabbing two or more steals in his last six games.

Jason Clark has been dominant on the boards for the Hogs, leading the team in both games last weekend. Clark grabbed seven rebounds against Cameron and 12 rebounds against MSU, coming just short of a double-double with seven points.

SCOUTING THE DUSTDEVILS

The Dustdevils come into the SPEC winning four of their last five games, including a 65-55 upset of then No. 4 Dallas Baptist.

TAMIU has found most of their success on the defensive end, only averaging 67.0 points per game with Matthew Okoye being the only Dustdevil to average double-digit points at 13.3 PPG.

The Dustdevil defense has racked up 72 blocks on the season and 196 steals, 30 more than their opponents.

However, the Dustdevils have had difficulties holding onto the ball themselves, having almost 20 more turnovers than their opposition despite the advantage in steals.

TAMIU offense has struggled at the basket, shooting only 24.2% from the field and 28.4% from deep. The Dustdevils have made things equally difficult for their opponents, however, holding them to only 23.0% from the field and 31.7 from behind the arc.
