PORTALES, N.M. - After dropping game one of the series-opening doubleheader, the Javelinas roared back from a three-run deficit to take game two, splitting the two games to open the series against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds.
The Javelinas (4-7, LSC 3-7) get back in the win column after dropping their last three against West Texas A&M. The Greyhounds (5-5, LSC 5-5) keep at .500 after splitting their first two series against Angelo State and TAMIU.
GAME ONE
The Greyhounds got up big early and did not look back, scoring six runs in the first inning off a lead-off home run then taking advantage of fielding error and a triple.
It took four innings for the Hogs to get on the board, scoring their first and only run in the top of the fourth as
Jake Chapman reached home on a wild pitch after getting on base thanks to a fielding error.
However, the Greyhounds responded right back, adding three more runs to their total in the bottom of the fourth along with one run in the fifth and three once again in the sixth, comfortably taking game one, 13-1.
Carter Poulson (0-1) is given the loss while Gavin Perry (1-2) picked up the win for ENMU.
GAME TWO
The second game was a much different story for TAMUK as this time they were the ones to strike immediately, putting two runs on the board in the first inning.
Garrett Thompson got things going from the jump, blasting a triple to open the game before
Jacob Rosales followed-up with a double for the first points only two batters into the game. Rosales then crossed the plate to extend the early Hog lead thanks to a single from
Kyle Perales.
ENMU responded an inning later, posting a run in the second before taking the lead with two runs in the third, 3-2. The Javelinas tied the game right after
Ramsey Amador reached home plate on a
Michael Cervantes single after Amador was walked to open the inning.
The Greyhounds looked to be threatening to sweep the doubleheader in the fifth, taking advantage of a wild pitch then a throwing error by the Hogs to bring three runs across the plater, making the score, 6-3. This time, though, the Javelinas did not go quietly, bouncing right back to tie the game in the sixth inning. Amador opened the inning with a triple down the right field line before scoring on a Cervantes single for the second time on the evening.
Colton Allen made good on his at-bat to put the tying run on base. With two outs on the board,
Dalton Kramer came through with the payoff, knocking a double to left to tie the game, 6-6.
After
Sergio Lopez got the Hogs out of a tight spot in the bottom of the sixth with a clutch strikeout, the game remained tied heading to the final inning. Rosales got the go-ahead run on base, drawing a walk. After having a mostly quiet second game, Chapman came through for the team, blasting a double to deep center field to score Rosales and give TAMUK the lead. Afterwards, Lopez and the Javelina defense took care of business, downing the Greyhound batting order in three straight batters to secure the win, 7-6.
Lopez (1-2) is credited with the win for the Javelinas. Josaiah Estrella is pegged with the loss for ENMU.
Game three of four kicks off tomorrow after, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m.
