Silver City, NM. - Texas A&M-Kingsville secures a winning record for the 2024 season after taking down Western New Mexico, 28-20, Saturday at Ben Altamirano Field.
The Javelinas (6-4, 5-3 Lone Star Conference) earned their third straight winning season by virtue of a three touchdown performance from
Jalen Brown. The defense made key stops late as well to help secure the win for the Javelinas.
Brown had 219 total yards to go with his three passing touchdowns,
Roger Hagan added 85 yards on the ground as well.
Jaylin Smith led the way with three catches for 37 yards and a touchdown and
Xavier Henderson put on a monster performance with 3.5 TFL's and two sacks.
From kick-off, the Javelinas played with a high level of intensity and tempo, marching right down the field on their opening drive. Brown would connect with
Jackson Allen in the endzone for a 11-yard touchdown as the Javelinas struck first.
Both teams would trade punts and miscues as the first half rolled on, the Mustangs would eventually put a nice drive together that included an early fourth-down conversion. Getting to the Javelina five yard line, a would-be completion was intercepted by D'cambren Verrett and ran all the way back for a 98-yard pick-six that gave the Javelinas a two possession lead. The Mustangs answered quickly on the other side, but a deep bomb from Brown to
CJ Thompson put 21 points on the board for the Javelinas just before halftime.
The second half started much like the first half, with the Javelinas marching down the field after a Western New Mexico punt. Brown would connect with Smith for another Touchdown and the Javelinas were sitting pretty up 28-6. The Mustangs then uncorked the offense, connecting on multiple deep shots and making the game a one-possession affair. The Javelinas defense would buckle up and hold the line, and the combination of Brown and Hagan would ice the game for the Javelinas.
Texas A&M-Kingsville returns home for Senior Night against Eastern New Mexico Nov. 16 at 7:00 p.m. CST. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game on Flosports or follow live coverage at JavelinaFB on Twitter.
