Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville stifled the offense of North American University as it won its' first exhibition game on Monday.
The Javelinas held the Stallions to just 57 points, 32 under what the Stallions had been averaging on the season. As a team, Texas A&M-Kingsville forced 19 turnovers and held North American to just 36.7 percent from the floor.
"I thought our guys did a great job battling and competing with a good team," said Head Coach
Omar Gonzalez. "They did a lot of different things to make it hard for us, and for a team with 10 new guys and two new coaches, I thought we did a great job holding our own."
Both teams came out of the gate with a certain intensity for defense, as no team would get over 10 points until 13 minutes were left on the clock in the first half. The Javelinas as a team would begin to find their offensive rhythm, hitting five 3-pointers from that point on and building a nine point lead entering the second half.
Entering the second half, the Javelinas and Stallions traded blows with each other. Every time the Javelinas would want to pull away, the Stallions would slowly close the distance before the Javelinas quelled North American's momentum. Eventually, the Javelinas would blow the game open with a 9-0 run midway through the second and continue their stout defense to ice the game.
Texas A&M-Kingsville opens up their regular season against South Dakota Mines Friday at 7:30 p.m. CST. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game on Flosports or follow the game at JavelinaMBB on Twitter.
