Javelinas get back on track with win over Oklahoma Christian

TAMUK outlasts Eagles in thrilling victory

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team faced off Saturday in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where they took down the Oklahoma Christian Eagles 60-57.
 
 "Extremely proud of our team and their effort on the road today." said coach Michael Madrid. " We always need to clean up some things but in the end a win is a win. We had multiple players make plays and help us steal one on the road. This was a program win!".

Junior Abby Bala was the player of the game for the Javelinas helping her offense with 12 points 6 rebounds and 2 Steals on the afternoon.

TAMUK outshot their opponent in multiple categories on the afternoon as they ended the game with a FG% of 39.6% as opposed to the Eagles 33.3%. The Javelinas also outshot their opponent from three 29.4% to 11.1%, however were outrebounded by the Eagles 37-39.

The Javelinas would start the game hot, as only eight game seconds would pass before Aina Maynou would drain a three-ball putting the Javelinas up early. Abby Bala would add on with a jumper putting it at 5-0 with still less than a minute gone in the game. Veyda Lake would go 1-2 from the line putting the Javelina lead at 6 with 8:09 left to go in the first. The Eagles would respond with a layup and a free throw cutting the Javelina lead to three with 7:51 left in the first. A Georgia Ohiaeri layup would be the last Javelina points for a while at the 6:42 point in the quarter, as the Eagles would go on a three minute and 56 second, 11-0 run putting the game at 8-14 with 2:46 eagles on top. A couple back and forth scores from both squads would end the first quarter 12-18 Eagles leading.

The second saw a continuation of the first as the Eagles started out the gates with a 5-1 run putting the score at 13-23 Oklahoma Christian up with 8:27 left in the quarter. A Bala three would light a spark for the Javelinas as they would go on a 2 minute and 45 second 8-0 scoring spree putting the game within one 22-23 with 5:21 left in the half. An almost full three minutes would pass before another score from either squad, but at the 2:52 marker in the half the Eagles would sink a jumper followed by a layup seemingly setting the score with 2:00 left in the half. Mia Rivers would splash a three heading into the locker room putting the Javelinas down two going into the half 25-27.

Coming out of the locker room it would be Lake getting the scoring going for the Javelinas as she would only take 19 seconds to tie things up at 27 apiece. It would take a full two minutes and 53 seconds before another score would be recorded, that being the Eagles with 7:07 left in the third. The Javelinas would then take off going on a 9-0 run putting the score at 36-29 with 5:46 left in the third. The Eagles would put together three points before the Javelinas would take off again going on a 10-2 run leaving the score at 39-32 with 3:37 left in the third. The Quarter would end with the Eagles putting together a 5-2 run sending things to the fourth 48-39 Javelinas in front.

The fourth would start off all Eagles as they would rattle off a 5-0 run putting the game at 48-44 with 8:36 left in the fourth.  A Jayde Tschritter layup would be followed by three OC free throws leaving the Javelinas holding a three-point lead 51-48 with 4:27 left. Both teams battled, putting together four points apiece leaving the game at 55-52 before the free throws took over. The last 2:05 of game time would consist of 5 TAMUK free throws and 5 OC free throws ending the game in a 60-57 Javelina victory.

The Javelinas are back out on the road next time out Thursday January 18th, in Denton, Texas where they will matchup against the Texas Woman's Pioneers in the Kitty Magee Arena tip off slated for 5:30 P.M.
