KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team is on a roll as they sweep the Western New Mexico Mustangs inside the Steinke Physical Education Center Wednesday 25-19, 25-12, 25-14.
The Javelinas (10-3, 2-0 LSC) have proven dominant as they haven't lost a single set in Lone Star Conference play so far this season winning both matches 3 sets to none. The Mustangs (4-10, 0-3 LSC) unable to find their groove here early have dropped their first three LSC matches.
Family weekend in full swing as not only did the Javelinas play at home for the fifth match in a row but also in front of their families, friends and a crowd full of little ones as they hosted a post-match clinic for children 11 and under after completing the sweep.
"The majority of our fan base is our families" said head coach
Tanya Allen-Gonzalez. "Families come out and support their kids, support us, and support the program, and it makes it feel like home."
The Javelinas relying more on their defensive strengths today as Freshman
Isabel Neu controlled the ball well defensively with 21 digs on the afternoon as Sophomore
Jeri Ficklen put together another strong performance having five total blocks in the win. Sophomore
Rylan Pollard helped out offensively adding five aces on top of her three kills, as Senior
Jackie Alanis led the way with 11 kills for the match.
The Javelinas started out keeping things interesting as both squads were going back and forth with six total tie scores and 2 total lead changes until a Ficklen block helped the Javelinas take a 14-11 lead and never look back taking set one.
Much of the same starting set two as the Javelinas took an early 7-0 lead and kept on rolling from there only allowing the mustangs 12 total points in the set, not allowing more than a 3 point run.
The third set started off all mustangs as they gained the early 6-3 lead, but the Javelinas came roaring back rattling off a 6-0 run and never surrendering the lead again capping off a sweep and the second for the Javelinas in a row.
The Javelinas are on the road for their next match Wednesday September 27th, as they face familiar foe Texas A&M International at 6 p.m. at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
