TYLER, Texas-Â The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team fell to UT Tyler, 10-0 on Saturday, as the Patriots secured a series victory in the opening round of the 2023 Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship at Irwin Field at the UT Tyler Ballpark.
The No. 6 Seed Javelinas (26-26, 25-23 LSC) were eliminated from the conference's postseason tournament by the No. 3 Seed Patriots (37-15, 34-14 LSC) and now await their NCAA postseason fate after being ranked 8th in the organizations last set of South Central Regional Rankings.
Miles Clack (7-1) picked up a run-rule victory for UTT, while junior Colton Taylor (7-5) was pegged with the loss for TAMUK. Taylor allowed four earned runs across 5.2 innings of work, striking out four before senior Luis Martinez and sophomore Karson Shepard took over on the bump.
The Javelinas logged six hits, two of which came courtesy of junior Michael Cervantes, while classmate Jacob Rosales, senior Steven Bonuz, redshirt junior Shelby Becker, and redshirt sophomore Ramsey Amador each recorded one.
UTT jumped on the board in the bottom of the first with an Austin Ochoa single, a triple by Carson Cox, and a Javelina miscue delivering a 4-0 Patriot lead.
Redshirt sophomore Dalton Kramer walked in the bottom of the second before swiping second and advancing to third on an error with two outs. However, he was left stranded as Clack induced a fly out to end the frame.
From there, things remained quiet until the bottom of the fifth, when a batter was plunked ahead of a walk and a stolen base that moved a pair of runners into scoring position. Taylor then worked a groundout halting the threat and keeping the Javelinas within striking distance.
Shortly after, in the bottom of the sixth, the Patriots pushed across five, affording them a 9-0 edge. The top of the seventh saw back-to-back two-out singles by Cervantes and Amador, but the pair were left stranded ahead of a walk, stolen base, and an error in the bottom of the inning that allowed Jordan Gochenour to end the contest early, scoring the 10th and final run.
