AZUSA, Calif. - Texas A&M-Kingsville's men's and women's track and field teams finished strong in the last day of the Azusa Pacific Last Chance meet on Saturday with several team members posting high finishes ahead of the upcoming NCAA Championships.
As he has done all season long, Thomas Nieto shined in the men's pole vault, winning the event with a best height of 5.42m (17' 9.5"). Fellow Javelinas, Reid Barba and Blake Gordon finished in sixth and eighth place respectively jumping 4.87m (15' 11.75") in the vault.
In the men's shot put, junior Garrett Burns and senior Marco Arevalo earned second and fourth place respectively after hurling their implements 16.45m (53' 11.75") and 16.28m (53'5").
In the women's triple jump Jazmin Ray finished fifth with a mark of 11.88m, while in the men's high jump, freshman Fakhreddine Benhadja finished eighth, clearing 1.99m (6' 6.25").
On the track, junior Michael Samihamba finished third in the men's 400-meter dash running a time of 47.17 seconds just off his best time of the season at 46.99 which he ran at the LSC Outdoor Track & Field Conference Championships back on May, 4.
Both the women and men's 4x400 meter relay teams took to the track, as the women led off with their best time of the season running a NCAA provisional time of 4:43.82, with the relay squad compiled of Melanie Roland, Vitiana Robert, Amber Gonzalez, and Cynai Christopher finishing second overall.
The men's 4x400 squad also finished second overall as the squad Sterling Riles, Bryson Dyer, Tony Benitez, and Samihamba ran the second fastest time of any Javelina relay team this season and fastest time as a group with a provisional time of 3:10.42.
The Javelinas will now prepare for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by CSU-Pueblo beginning May 25.
