LAREDO, Texas-Â The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team fell in their final contest of the regular season, suffering a 9-4 defeat at the hands of Texas A&M-International at Jorge Haynes Field in Lone Star Conference action on Monday.
Â
The Javelinas (26-24, 25-23 LSC) split a road series with the Dustdevils (19-27, 18-26 LSC) as senior Luis Martinez (6-4) suffered a loss, while (4-5) Lalo Salinas picked up the win for TAMIU.Â
Â
At the plate, redshirt junior Ivan Duarte and junior Jacob Rosales each logged multiple hits, while Rosales plated a pair of runs.Â
Â
TAMUK used a two-out rally in the top of the first to take an early lead, with sophomore Jake Chapman and senior Steven Bonuz logging singles and advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch. Rosales stepped up and cleared the bases with a hot shot into center field that saw a 2-0 Blue and Gold edge.Â
Â
The Dustdevils then responded with a Joseph Cruz solo home run in the bottom half for a 2-1 score entering the second stanza. TAMIU then equalized in the third using a single to plate a runner who walked and moved up to third on a Javelina miscue.Â
Â
Things were quiet over the subsequent two frames before a three-run home run by Beto Cervantes in the bottom of the sixth resulted in a 5-2 TAMIU lead. They tacked on one more in the inning before senior Matthew Vasquez entered and stranded runners at every base via a fielder's choice ground ball. Â
Â
Another Dustdevil run came across in the seventh, and two more scored in the eighth, resulting in a 9-2 score line entering the ninth.Â
Â
Duarte singled, Bonuz was walked, and redshirt sophomore Hayden Johnson was plunked to load up the bases in the final frame as the Javelinas attempted to mount a comeback. Classmate Jaden Cavazos was then issued a free pass, plating Duarte and inducing a TAMIU pitching change with one out. Following the break, junior Shelby Becker walked, scoring Bonuz before two outs resulted in a 9-4 final score.Â
Â
This concludes the regular season for Texas A&M-Kingsville, and the Javelinas will now await their seedings for the 2023 Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship tournament, which will begin on Friday, May 5, with a best-of-three opening round series hosted by each of the top-four seeds. Â
