De Los Santos tosses No-Hitter as Javelinas take two from MSU

The Javelinas won game one 3-1, before De Los Santos twirled a gem in a walk-off game two victory

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team picked up a 3-1 victory in game one of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader before sophomore Carissa De Los Santos tossed a no-hitter en route to a walk-off 1-0 win over Midwestern State at Vernie and Blanch Hubert Field on Tuesday. Additionally, De Los Santos kept the opposition hitless for the first time in her career while logging the fifth seven-inning no-hitter in program history and the first since teammate Beth Montes accomplished the feat in 2021.

The Javelinas (19-18, 16-13 LSC) stretched their win streak to five as they bested the Mustangs (8-33, 7-25 LSC), earning a pair of victories across two pitchers' duals.

The Javelinas claimed a 3-1 battle to open the day as junior Lizette Del Angel (4-5) picked up the win in relief, tossing the final 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and just three hits. Meanwhile, Christine Billmeier (1-1) was handed the loss for the Mustangs after going the distance for her squad.

The Mustangs got on the board quickly, using an RBI double by Payton Griffin to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

TAMUK responded in the bottom of the second, as senior Matisen Onofrei walked, and junior Natalie Rodriguez singled, putting a runner in scoring position for classmate Anissa Lechner. The McKinney, Texas native then smacked a single through the left side, plating Rodriguez to tie the contest.

A scoreless third followed, with Del Angel replacing Montes midway through following three strikeouts over 2.1 innings.

A two-out rally in the fourth handed TAMUK a 2-1 edge as Lechner walked, swiped second, and charged home on an MSU error for the first Blue and Gold lead of the day.

The Javelinas added another insurance run in the sixth, with sophomore Rylee Oborski coming around and scoring on a freshman Shelbie Peal single.

Now up 3-1, Del Angel sealed the deal with a scoreless seventh, capping off the game-one victory and getting the Javelinas back to .500 on the season.

Game Two
The Javelinas dramatically took game two as De Los Santos (5-5) twirled a gem fanning two over seven hitless frames with no walks, and Kennedy Cameron (3-9) was tagged with the loss as TAMUK walked it off in the bottom of the seventh.

Following six scoreless frames, a Mustang error and a single by junior Aaliyah Ortiz resulted in a pair of base runners with no outs in the sixth. Onofrei sacrificed herself, and Lechner walked, but two fielder's choice ground balls cut the Javelinas down at the plate, sending the game into the seventh still knotted at zero.

De Los Santos tossed another hitless inning, and freshman Brylee Bilger walked to open the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Andrea Martinez pinch ran, and senior Jory Cervantes was issued a free pass, putting two on for junior Breana Carr. She was also walked, juicing the bases for junior Kayla Gonzales, who was plunked, allowing the Javelinas to walk it off and score the only run of the ballgame.
The teams will battle once more as the Javelinas eye a series sweep, with the first pitch at Hubert Field set for noon.
