Javelinas fall twice on Final Day of Conni & Jay Wise Islander Classic

TAMUK first suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of SFA before dropping a 4-1 contest against TAMUCC

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Saturday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team suffered a pair of defeats on Day Two of the Conni & Jay Wise Islander Classic, first falling 3-2 to Stephen F. Austin, ahead of a 4-1 loss against host-school Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Waters Edge Park.

TAMUK vs. SFA

The Javelinas narrowly suffered a 3-2 loss to open the day as the No. 4 flight of freshmen Kalani Vasquez and Meghan Stiefer took the Lumberjacks to three sets, first falling 21-14 before bouncing back and taking the second stanza 21-19. SFA, however, prevailed, edging out the tandem 15-13 in the deciding set.

Shortly after, the No. 5 pair of junior Jackie Alanis and newcomer Taylor McCarthy went down 25-23 but rallied 21-15 in the next set before topping the opposition 15-13 to knot the contest at one apiece.

The No. 3 combo of junior Grace Gettys and freshman Olivia Zeigler had their five-match winning streak snapped as they lost 21-10, 21-19, ahead of a 21-15, 21-12 defeat for freshman Rylan Pollard and junior Adrienne VanBrunt in the first flight.

Freshman Madelyn Wallace and Rylie Anderson picked up the squad's second win in the contest's final court, working a 21-16, 21-18 victory.

TAMUK vs. TAMUCC

The Javelinas then faced the Islanders as a part of the TAMUCC Senior Day, which featured a Southland Conference Championship trophy presentation. TAMUK lost 4-1, picking up a win in the fourth flight 21-18, 22-20 to open the contest.

The No 5's then fell 21-18, 21-18, ahead of a 21-17, 21-10 loss on the No. 1 court.

Looking to keep their team in the match, the Javelinas jumped out in front to begin the third flight with a 21-17 first-set score. TAMUCC then took set two 21-13 before winning the deciding frame 15-11, securing the victory.

The No. 2's also put up a tough fight, recovering from a 21-14 loss in the first set and taking the second stanza 26-24. The hosts, however, won 15-7 to pick up their fourth point.

The Javelinas will be back in action on Friday as they take on the Colorado Mesa Tournament, first battling the hosts at noon before facing Mesa Community College at 4 p.m. The competition continues with a noon matchup against the Thunderbirds to close things out on Saturday.
