TAMUK takes two from St. Mary’s across Saturday twin bill

The Javelinas won game one 11-5, ahead of a 4-1 victory in game two

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team won a pair of games on Saturday, as the Javelinas took game one from St. Mary's 11-5, ahead of a 4-1 win in game two of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Nolan Ryan Field.

The Javelinas (21-16, 20-15 LSC) took two from the Rattlers (16-17, 14-17 LSC) to clinch at least a series split, with senior Luis Martinez and junior Colton Taylor

each logging their sixth win, while senior Steven Bonuz drove in four runs for the Hogs.

Game One

L. Martinez (6-1) picked up the victory as Clay Bradford (3-4) was tagged with the loss after an 11-5 Javelina win. L. Martinez struck out six and allowed six hits across the first 4.2 innings of the ballgame before handing the ball to freshman Marco Martinez, ahead of sophomore Carter Poulson in the final frame. Meanwhile, Bonuz and redshirt sophomore Hayden Johnson each posted 3 RBIs to pave the way for the Pack at the dish.

The Rattlers got on the board first, using an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Following a scoreless second, StMU added two more to their total thanks to a Jake Marez RBI double and a wild pitch.

Now down 3-0, junior Jacob Rosales drove a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left field to put the Pack on the scoreboard. Redshirt sophomore Ramsey Amador and junior Michael Cervantes each singled, and sophomore Dalton Kramer walked to load up the bases with no outs. A warning track sacrifice fly by Wolff narrowly stayed in the park, pushing one across, before Bonuz smashed a bases-clearing triple that resulted in a 4-3 Blue and Gold lead. The Hogs still weren't done as junior Shelby Becker slapped a single up the middle pushing Bonuz across. TAMUK then got its sixth run of the inning on a Johnson single, allowing Becker to dent the plate for a 6-3 edge entering the fourth.

A Javelina miscue saw StMU threatening with two in scoring position and two outs in the top of the fifth before M. Martinez entered, inducing a pop-up and ending the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, Wolff walked, and Bonuz singled as a sac-bunt by Becker set the table for Johnson. The Conroe, Texas native delivered two more TAMUK runs with a hard-hit single down the right field line.

StMU was trailing 8-3, entering the top of the sixth, but a crooked number put them within striking distance as the scoreboard read 8-5 before the conclusion of the inning.

Thomson and Cervantes each recorded full-count walks to open the bottom of the sixth, with Thompson coming across shortly after on a Kramer single. A balk moved runners into scoring position, and a four-pitch free pass was issued to Wolff putting ducks on the pond for Bonuz. The Port Lavaca Calhoun graduate then picked up his third RBI of the contest on a sacrifice fly ball, with Kramer coming across on a throwing error moments later for an 11-5 Javelina edge.

Poulson then tossed a scoreless seventh, securing the Blue and Gold victory.

Game Two

Taylor (6-3) tossed a complete game featuring 10 strikeouts en route to a 4-1 Javelina win, with John Curtis (2-3) getting tagged with the loss. Duarte, Bonuz, Becker, and junior Garrett Thompson all drove in runs as the Pack secured at least a series split.

The Rattlers scored their lone run in the top of the first, as back-to-back singles, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly ball pushed one across. Taylor then had a runner on third with one out, but a prompt strikeout and a lazy ground ball limited the damage.

TAMUK wasted no time getting the run back, as Kramer singled to open the bottom of the first before scoring from first on a double into the gap by Duarte. A stolen base moved Duarte to third, but he was caught trying to swipe home, sending the squads into the second stanza with a 1-1 tie.

Things remained quiet until the fourth when Becker smashed the first pitch he saw over the wall in left-center for a 2-1 Blue and Gold lead. Later, in the bottom of the fifth, Rosales belted a leadoff triple and crossed the plate on a Thompson sacrifice for a two-run Javelina edge.

TAMUK got one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, with a Bonuz home run representing the final run of the ballgame.

The Javelinas will look to claim the series victory on Sunday, with a 1 p.m. first pitch awaiting the squads at Nolan Ryan Field.
