Quartet of champions crowned at Trinity Invitational

Four different TAMUK competitors won events in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO- The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program took on their first meet of the 2023 outdoor season across Friday and Saturday, with four different student-athletes tasting victory at the Trinity Invitational, while junior Katryna Hernandez won a pair of events.

Hernandez topped the field in the shot put as she launched the implement 13.83m (45-4.5) on her sixth and final throw to climb the leader board. She was joined by junior Mackenzie Contreras on the podium, as Contreras recorded a 12.91m (42-4.25) mark for silver.

The hammer throw featured another stellar performance by Hernandez, with a 47.83m (156-11) toss cementing her second gold medal in as many events. Freshman Mary Lloyd also competed, taking second with a 44.64m (146-5) throw in her Blue and Gold outdoor debut.

Additionally, the Javelinas swept the women's discus, as graduate student Veronica Garcia placed first at 42.96m (140-11), with Contreras in second at 40.53m (133-0) and graduate student Diana Bustos third at 39.26m (128-10).

Meanwhile, in the men's events, graduate student Stephen Cardenas was the champion in the hammer throw at 55.68m (182-8), while senior Marco Arevalo took gold in the shot put at 16.52m (54-2.5). TAMUK would sweep the shot put, as graduate student D.J. Delancy was issued second thanks to a 16.09m (52-9.5) measurement, while sophomore Jesse Contreras earned third at 15.11m (49-7).

Delancy also placed third in the discus, following a 45.01m (147-8) attempt on his second throw, with junior Paxton Hair in second at 47.87m (157-1)

The next outdoor meet is slated for Friday, Mar. 17, as the Javelinas head to Abilene, Texas, for the Wes Kittley Invitational at Elmer Gray Stadium.
