KINGSVILLE, Texas – Javelina softball is rolling following the team's 5-3 win on Saturday afternoon over Lone Star Conference rival St. Edward's that saw TAMUK complete its second straight sweep in conference play.
With the sweep complete, the Javelinas improved to 9-8 on the season and 6-3 in Lone Star Conference play riding a six-game winning streak.
"I love where our team is at right now," said interim coach Orlando Salinas. "Our pitchers were dealing across all series long, and our hitting was timely."
One of those big hitters was team leader, Kayla Gonzales who laced bases clearing 3-RBI double in the fourth inning which later proved to be the game winning hit.
"Kayla is not only one of our best players, but one of the best players in the country." said Salinas addressing the shortstop's recent performance at the plate. "She's a power five player, but we are fortunate enough to have her, and it's a joy coaching her."
The Javelina offense got rolling in the third inning as Matisen Onofrei knocked a two-out single through the left side of the St. Ed infield scoring Breanna Carr to put TAMUK up 1-0.
The offense picked right back up in the fourth as Jory Cervantes singled to left center scoring Anissa Lechner who walked to open the inning. Following Cervantes, the bases were walked loaded for Gonzales who smacked a fastball to the center field wall clearing the bases and putting TAMUK up 5-0.
St. Edward's did not go quitely though, getting two runs across in the top of the fifth, before threatening more in the seventh. The Hilltoppers got one more across in the final frame on a fielder's choice with runners on second and third, but Beth Montes forced a fly out to left field to end the game to get the complete game win.
Montes (5-2), threw a complete game giving up only two earned runs off five hits while striking out three St. Ed batters.
Next, the Javelinas will travel to Laredo to take on Texas A&M International with a series beginning Tuesday.
