Javelinas take down Houston Christian on Day One of Conni & Jay Wise Islander Classic

TAMUK claimed a 3-2 victory, with the third, fourth, and fifth flights winning

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Friday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team wrapped up Day One of the Conni & Jay Wise Islander Classic as they took Down Houston Christian 3-2 at Waters Edge Park.

The Javelinas (9-11) got the better of the Huskies (12-10), with the third, fourth, and fifth flights all delivering victories.

The No. 5 tandem of junior Jackie Alanis and freshman Taylor McCarthy put TAMUK on the board with a 21-13, 21-17 win that opened the match. Shortly after, the newcomer duo of Kalani Vasquez and Meghan Stiefer worked a 21-17, 21-13 victory on the fourth court, resulting in a two-score Blue and Gold edge.

HCU battled back, taking down the No. 1 pair of freshman Rylan Pollard and junior Adrienne VanBrunt 21-17, 21-10, ahead of a 24-22, 21-15 decision in the second flight that saw newcomer Madelyn Wallace and junior Rylie Anderson fall.

In the deciding match, freshman Olivia Zeigler and junior Grace Gettys didn't waver as they topped the Huskies' third flight 21-12, 21-14 to secure their fifth consecutive win and the team's third victory over an NCAA Division I opponent in as many weeks.

The Javelinas return to The Sparkling City by the Sea on Saturday as they face Stephen F Austin at 11 a.m. before concluding the tournament at 1 p.m. facing host school and Southland Conference champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
