Javelinas drop series finale against WT, 6-5

TAMUK rally falls short after WT gets walk-off win

CANYON, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville's softball team fell in its series finale against #20 West Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon, 6-5.

The Javelinas (14-18, 11-13 LSC) rallied multiple times throughout the game including a two-run seventh inning to take a one-run lead before the Lady Buffs (29-4, 20-4 LSC) got a rally of their own to get a walk-off win after loading the bases.

The Javelinas threatened early in the first getting a pair of runners into scoring position but were unable to bring any runs in to take advantage of the opportunity.

WT took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run with no outs putting the Lady Buffs up 1-0.

TAMUK finally got a run across in the fourth as Anissa Lechner delivered a one-out bases-loaded single up the middle scoring one run before the Javs recorded two straight outs with no more runs coming across.

The Lady Buffs took the lead right back in the bottom half of the fourth with an RBI single of their own taking a 2-1 lead.

The Blue and Gold, answered in the fifth as Kayla Gonzales and Aaliyah Ortiz hit back-to-back solo shots to left putting the Javelinas up 3-2.

The lead did not last long for the Javs as WT took the lead back with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the fifth going up 4-3.

Gonzales tied things again for the Javelinas in the seventh, this time with an RBI double scoring Breanna Carr who singled to lead the inning off.

Later in the seventh, Matisen Onofrei delivered the lead back to TAMUK with an RBI single up the middle scoring Gonzales from second to take a 5-4 lead going into the final frame.

The one run would not be enough for TAMUK the bottom of the seventh, WT worked the bases loaded before an RBI single and fielder's choice earned the Lady Buffs the 6-5 walk-off win.

Beth Montes (8-8) took the loss for the Javelinas pitching two and a third innings in relief giving up three runs across four hits.

TAMUK will now return home for a series against UT Permian Basin beginning on Friday with a doubleheader.
