OKLAHOMA CITY- The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team earned a 16-4 run-rule victory over Oklahoma Christian in a Lone Star Conference series finale on Sunday at Dobson Field as redshirt junior Ivan Duarte recorded a game-high five RBIs, while junior Nick Wolff went deep.Â
The Javelinas (19-15, 18-14 LSC) claimed their second consecutive series win, as they bested the Eagles (11-18, 11-17 LSC), thanks to an offensive explosion that saw Duarte, Wolff, redshirt sophomore Dalton Kramer, junior Jacob Rosales, and redshirt sophomore Ramsey Amador all log multiple RBIs, while junior Shelby Becker went 4-for-5 at the dish.Â
Sophomore Karson Shepard (2-1) picked up the win, tossing the first five frames, allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts, before junior Cole Payne threw the final two innings, fanning one. Additionally, Blake Empkey (2-3) was charged with the loss.
The Eagles struck first, plating a run in the bottom of the first to take a slim lead. The Javelinas responded in the top of the second as TAMUK loaded up the bases before Kramer drew a walk and Duarte singled for a 2-1 Blue and Gold lead. OC then knocked in a pair during the bottom of the stanza, using a bases-clearing triple to go up 3-2.Â
The slugfest continued in the top of the fourth, as singles by senior Steven Bonuz, Becker, and redshirt sophomore Hayden Johnson loaded up the bases for Rosales, who dropped a base hit into right field that was misplayed, allowing the trio to score.Â
Now leading 5-3, Rosales smoked a triple into center field before scoring on a bunt by junior Garrett Thompson, increasing the TAMUK edge in the top of the fifth. From there, Duarte worked a two-out double that plated Kramer and Amador for an 8-3 score line. The Hogs still weren't done, as Wolff stepped up the plate and delivered a two-run bomb to put his squad up seven.
OC got one back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Javelina offense picked up right where they left off as singles by Becker and Johnson, as well as a Rosales walk, loaded up the bases for Amador. The Edinburg, Texas native then sent a screamer down the right field line, scoring two and putting runners on the corners with no outs. Thompson was issued a free pass ahead of a sac fly by Kramer that scored the team's 13th run. Duarte slapped a double into left field, pushing two more across the plate, ahead of a Bonuz single that saw a 16-4 score line at the conclusion of the inning.Â
Payne then finished things off on the mound, securing the run-rule victory for the Pack.Â
The Javelinas now invite St. Mary's into Kingsville, Texas, as they'll face the Rattlers in four Lone Star Conference games beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. at Nolan Ryan Field.
