Javelinas best Bearcats, fall to Warhawks on final day of ULM Bayou Bash

The No. 3 tandem of Grace Gettys and Olivia Zeigler went undefeated across the tournament

MONROE, La. — The Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball program concluded competition at the ULM Bayou Bash on Saturday, as they took down Southwest Baptist 4-1 before falling 4-1 to host school Louisiana Monroe. Additionally, the No. 3 duo of junior Grace Gettys and freshman Olivia Zeigler wrapped up the tournament as the lone undefeated TAMUK tandem.

The Javelinas had a solid morning, picking up a 4-1 victory over the Bearcats for their third win of the tournament. 
 
The day began with a point in the second flight, as junior Rylie Anderson and freshman Madelyn Wallace cruised to a 21-11, 21-10 victory. The No. 4 combo of newcomers Meghan Stiefer and Kalani Vasquez then routed the opposition 21-15, 21-18 putting TAMUK one court away from taking the match. 
 
Gettys and Zeigler put the finishing touches on the win, using a 21-10, 21-7 score line to top their opponents. Junior Jackie Alanis and freshman Taylor McCarthy proceeded to pick up the squad's fourth point, taking down a Bearcat tandem 21-14, 21-16. 
 
SBU got their lone point of the contest in the first flight, as freshman Rylan Pollard and junior Adrienne VanBrunt fell in three sets, 21-14, 18-21, 15-11. Additionally, freshman Elizabeth Williams and junior Caitlin Willson won in the extra match 21-14, 21-16.

The Javelinas then fell to the Warhawks 4-1, as the No. 4's fell 21-10, 21-18 to open the contest. 
 
The No. 5's then went down 21-18, 21-15, ahead of a 21-14, 21-17 loss in the second flight. The No. 1's suffered a 21-17, 21-13 setback before the Gettys and Zeigler capped off the tournament with their fourth consecutive win. 
 
The pair narrowly took the first set 22-20 before falling 21-16 in the second. The duo continued battling, narrowly claiming a 15-13 win in the deciding set to preserve their perfect weekend. 
 
Additionally, in the extra match, sophomore Delaney Evans teamed up with Willson, falling 21-12, 21-16.
 
The Javelinas now sit at 8-11 on the season and have a chance to get back to .500 as they compete at the Conni & Jay Wise Islander Classic beginning on Friday with a 1 p.m. challenge against Houston Christian in Corpus Christi, Texas, ahead of a pair of matches Saturday against Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
