Javelinas take two on Day One of ULM Bayou Bash

The Javelinas dropped just one point on the first day of the tournament

MONROE, La. — On Friday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball program put together a pair of stellar performances as they swept Nicholls State 5-0, ahead of a 4-1 victory over Southwest Baptist on the inaugural day of competition at the ULM Bayou Bash on the campus of Louisiana-Monroe.

The Javelinas started the day sweeping NCAA Division I opponent Nicholls State as three courts went the distance. 
 
The No. 5 combo of freshman Taylor McCarthy and junior Jackie Alanis made quick work of the opposition 21-9, 21-8, ahead of a 21-16, 21-9 performance by newcomers Meghan Stiefer and Kalani Vasquez that saw TAMUK go up by two. 
 
On the No. 3 court, junior Grace Gettys and freshman Olivia Zeigler took the first set 21-14 before dropping the second stanza 21-18. The duo continued battling, claiming the final frame 15-13, securing the Blue and Gold victory.
 
The final two courts reached three sets as well, with the No. 2 combo of freshman Madelyn Wallace and junior Rylie Anderson claiming a 21-17, 17-21, 15-11 win ahead of a 12-21,25-23,15-8 come-from-behind victory on the No. 1 court for freshman Rylan Pollard and junior Adrienne VanBrunt. 
 
Additionally, sophomore Delaney Evans and junior Caitlin Willson competed in the extra match, falling 21-15, 16-21, 15-11.

The Javelinas then battled the Bearcats, closing out the day with a 4-1 victory that resulted in the 7th win of the season.
 
McCarthy and Alanis got things going once more, picking up a 21-10, 21-10 win on the No. 5 court before the No. 2's worked a 21-17, 21-18 win. SBU got one back as they earned a 21-16, 21-9 win against the No. 1's. Gettys and Zeigler, however, prevailed in the third flight using a 21-7, 21-12 win to propel the Javelinas toward their second win of the tournament. 
 
The No. 4's then closed out the day with a 21-12, 21-13 win that wrapped up the contest. 
 
Additionally, Evans and Willson fell in the extra match 21-16, 21-19.
 
TAMUK will once again meet SBU at 8 a.m. on Saturday before closing out the tournament against host-school ULM at 10:30 a.m.
