Javelinas fall to Privateers and Lions on final day of Sugar Beach Slam

Three separate trios took points on Saturday at Sugar Beach

YOUNGSVILLE, La. — The Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball program wrapped up competition at the Southeastern Sugar Beach Slam on Saturday, first falling to New Orleans 3-2 before suffering a 4-1 setback against North Alabama.

The Javelinas first suffered a 3-2 defeat against the Privateers, as the No. 4 pair of freshmen Meghan Stiefer and Kalani Vasquez went down 21-18, 21-12, before the No. 5 combo of junior Jackie Alanis and newcomer Taylor McCarthy knotted things up, thanks to a 21-18, 16-21, 15-13 thriller. 
 
UNO then topped the Javs' No. 1 pairing of freshman Rylan Pollard and junior Adrienne VanBrunt 21-10, 21-10, ahead of a 21-19, 21-15 win for junior Grace Gettys and freshman Olivia Zeigler. 
 
On the deciding court, the Privateers worked a 21-14, 21-17 win over the No. 2 pairing of junior Rylie Anderson and newcomer Madelyn Wallace to take the match. 
 
Additionally, freshman Delaney Evans and junior Caitlin Willson won on the extra court, 23-21, 17-21, and 15-13.
 
TAMUK vs. North Alabama
 
The Javelinas then fell 4-1 to the Lions after UNA jumped out in front using three sets to take down the TAMUK No. 5's 21-17, 18-21, 15-6. The Javs then picked up their lone point in the fourth flight, with Stiefer and Vasquez claiming the first frame 21-17 before falling 21-14 in the second. The duo then persevered in a hard-fought 15-13 win that tied the contest. 
 
The Lions then won a 21-17, 21-18 win over the No. 3's, ahead of a match-clinching 21-15, 21-15 contest on the second court. UNA closed things out by winning on court No. 1, 21-15, 21-16.
 
In the extra match, Evans and Willson fell 22-20, 21-11.
 
The Javelinas now look to improve upon a 5-10 record as they travel to Monroe, Louisiana, to compete at the ULM Bayou Bash, first meeting Nicholls State at 8 a.m. on Friday, ahead of a 1 p.m. matchup with Southwest Baptist. The tournament will conclude on Saturday with an 8 a.m. contest against the Bearcats before a 10:30 a.m. finale against host-school Louisiana-Monroe.
