Javelinas fall to No. 4/5 LSU and Southern Miss on Day Two of Horned Frog Challenge

The No. 4 duo and No. 5 pair picked up victories against the Golden Eagles

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball program wrapped things up at the 2023 Horned Frog Challenge, falling to No. 4/5 Louisiana State 5-0 before narrowly suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Southern Miss at the TCU beach courts on Saturday. 
 
TAMUK vs. No. 4/5 LSU
 
The Javelinas could not overcome a potent Tiger lineup, falling 5-0 in their first contest on Saturday.
 
First, the No. 4 duo of freshmen Meghan Stiefer and Kalani Vasquez lost 21-10, 21-14, before the tandem of junior Jackie Alanis and freshman Taylor McCarthy fell 21-9, 21-13 on the No. 5 court. 
 
The No. 1 combo of freshman Madelyn Wallace and junior Adrienne VanBrunt lost 21-6, 21-4, while freshman Rylan Pollard and junior Rylie Anderson went down 21-17, 21-12 in the second flight. 
 
On the No. 3 court, junior Grace Gettys and freshman Olivia Zeigler sent the first set to a win-by-two scenario before narrowly dropping a 22-20 frame, ahead of a 21-17 defeat that saw the Tigers confirm a sweep. 
 
Additionally, in the extra match, freshman Delaney Evans and junior Caitlin Willson lost 21-
 
TAMUK vs. Southern Miss
 
The Javelinas battled the Golden Eagles for the second time in as many days, falling 3-2, with the squad picking up a pair of victories in the fourth and third flights.
 
The No. 5 tandem went down 21-18, 21-16 to open the contest before the fours claimed TAMUK's first point of the tournament. Stiefer and Vasquez picked up a commanding 21-13 victory in the first frame before the Golden Eagles fought back, taking set two 21-18. The Javelinas, however, prevailed, cruising to a 15-11 win to knot the score at one apiece. 
 
In the second flight, Pollard and Anderson fell 21-15, 21-13, ahead of a 21-13, 21-12 decision in USM's favor on the No. 1 court. 
 
The threes then picked up a win, as Gettys and Zeigler took the first set 21-19 before dropping the second 21-12. The pair rolled through the deciding set, taking the frame 15-9.
 
The Golden Eagles also claimed victory in the extra match, besting the Javelina tandem 21-16, 22-20.
 
The Javelinas are now 4-7 on the year and will look to improve their record at the SELU Mardi gras Classic, where they'll battle Spring Hill College at 9 a.m. in Youngsville, Louisiana on Friday, Mar. 17, ahead of a 1 p.m. matchup with New Orleans. The competition continues on Saturday with another contest with the Privateers at 9 a.m. and an 11 a.m. showdown with North Alabama.
