Javelinas unable to overcome No. 1 TCU, Southern Miss on Day One of Horned Frog Challenge

The tandems of Grace Gettys/Olivia Zeigler and Taylor McCarthy/Jackie Alanis were the lone groups to win sets

FORT WORTH, Texas — On Friday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball program battled No. 1/1 Texas Christian University, as well as Southern Mississippi, first falling 5-0 to TCU before suffering a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Golden Eagles on Day One of the Horned Frog Challenge.
 
TAMUK vs. No. 1/1 TCU
 
The Javelinas started the day falling 5-0 against unanimous No. 1 TCU, as the No. 4 pair of freshmen Meghan Stiefer and Kalani Vasquez fell 21-9, 21-15 to open the contest. The No. 5 duo of junior Jackie Alanis and freshman Taylor McCarthy then lost 21-15, 21-13, before newcomer Rylan Pollard and junior Rylie Anderson went down 21-10, 21-7 on the No. 2 court.
 
Wrapping things up, the No. 1 duo of junior Adrienne VanBrunt and freshman Madelyn Wallace fell 21-10, 21-7, and the No. 3 pair of junior Grace Gettys and freshman Olivia Zeigler lost 21-10, 21-7. 
 
Additionally, freshman Delaney Evans and junior Caitlin Willson went down 21-8,21-4.
 
TAMUK vs. Southern Miss
 
The Javelinas then suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Golden Eagles, despite three courts reaching a third and deciding set. 
 
Southern Miss took a 21-17, 21-16 victory on the fourth court before McCarthy and Alanis picked up a first set win 21-19, then fell in the second stanza 22-20. The Golden Eagles took the set and put themselves one score away from victory, thanks to a 15-10 win in the third. 
 
Wallace and VanBrunt fell 21-15, 21-11, ahead of a 21-11, 21-9 win on court two for the Golden Eagles. Gettys and Zeigler won the first set 21-15, but the script flipped, and they went down 21-15 in the next frame. The deciding set went down to the wire before USM capped off a sweep with a 17-15 win on the No. 3 court. 
 
The extra match reached three sets as well as Willson and Evans fell 20-22, 21-14, 8-6.
 
TAMUK's record now sits at 4-5 on the season, and they'll face two formidable challenges on Saturday as the Horned Frog Challenge continues with the Javelinas meeting No.4/5 Louisiana State at 8:30 a.m., ahead of another contest with the Golden Eagles at 2:45 p.m.
