KINGSVILLE, Texas-Â On Sunday, The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team dropped a 9-8 decision to St. Edwards in what represented the series finale between the squads in Lone Star Conference action at Nolan Ryan Field.Â
Â
The No. RV/NR Javelinas (0-4, 0-4 LSC) fell one run shy of extra innings against the No. RV/16 Hilltoppers (0-4, 0-4 LSC), with Jared Schaeffer (1-0) picking up the win, Carter Poulson (0-1) the loss, and Kevin Skewers (1) the save.Â
Â
Four Javelinas drove in runs, including junior Shelby Becker, who led off the bottom of the first with his first home run of the season while finishing a triple shy of the cycle.Â
Â
SEU then put up crooked numbers in both the second and third innings, ahead of a bottom frame that began with a Becker single. Classmate Nick Wolff walked ahead of a redshirt sophomore Ramsey Amador bunt that induced a throwing error, plating Becker. Wolff later scored on an errant throw before a sophomore Jake Chapman double that sent Amador home.Â
Â
Sophomore Robbie Spencer tossed the first five frames for the Javelinas, striking out a career-high five batters.Â
Â
The bottom of the fifth started with a Wolff double, as the catcher from Klein, Texas, came around and scored on a sharply hit ball by senior Steven Bonuz for a 5-4 Blue and Gold lead.Â
Â
In relief, Paulson logged his first strikeout as a Javelina before SEU plated a pair. He then kept the Toppers off the scoreboard in the seventh. TAMUK tied things up in the bottom half thanks to a Becker double, a wild pitch, and a balk.
Â
With the score knotted at six, three more Hilltopper runs crossed the plate in the eighth, ahead of a junior Matthew Castro sac-fly, resulting in a 9-7 score line entering the final frame.
Â
Freshman Marco Martinez made his Javelina debut on the slab tossing 0.2 of an inning and surrendering a hit, while senior Luis Martinez tossed the final 0.2 innings of the ballgame keeping the Toppers hitless and the Hogs within striking distance.
Â
Wolff singled and was replaced by sophomore Dalton Kramer on the base paths, who came around and scored on a Bonuz single with two outs bringing the Pack within one. Skewers then induced a groundout for a 9-8 final score.
Â
The Javelinas now head to Canyon, Texas, for a four-game series against West Texas A&M at Wilder Park that begins Friday at 2 p.m.
